This is a novella which was originally part of an anthology, Angels of Darkness, released in October 4, 2011 by Berkley. Origins was just released on its own. I polished it off in a couple of hours.
As one would expect, something by Ilona Andrews would be well-written enough to hold attention. This was tense and somewhat fast-moving. As with any new world, there were the details to learn and understand. I often take the feel of the main character. Karina was brave and smart; I think she was unrealistically so. I couldn’t believe she could manage so much of what she did. I felt more confused and unsettled, than caring, amused, enlightened or uplifted.
It went too fast and ended too quickly to get me any farther. There’s a whole, wide world there and the surface is so barely scratched. I don’t know much and I’m not sure I care enough about the characters to read more. I DO care enough about this author, so I couldn’t help wondering if there will be more. My recommendation would be to wait and see if there will be more. It’s not quite enough on its own. I found an answer on Goodreads – Ask the Author – where it says they won’t write more since it was too dark, too scary, not funny enough, and most of their readers didn’t like it.

I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters.The other thing I enjoy is humor.

I think I read this, but it was a long time ago as part of the anthology. I don’t remember my thoughts on it. I do love Ilona Andrews and have read every book that they have put out. I don’t regret that for one minute.
Melanie – you’re right. I would never NOT read it because it is by Ilona Andrews. But it wasn’t long enough to do what I needed. I’m sure if they wrote on in the series it would be awesome, but they say they will not be doing that. Anne
I just finished the Angels of Darkness anthology, just to read this novella by the Andrews team. I also read all the others in the anthology.
I agree it’s a very vast world and we barley scratch the surface and it was dark. Very different from what Andrews fans are use too. I am in a way wanting more and also not wanting more, but you answered my questions about if they would right more in this world.

Even for my fav series I don’t usually read the between novellas because there is never enough story.
