I got all of these books at the library as digital audiobooks except the novella which was a Kindle ebook.  I have read most of the Sabina Kane series but picked up this new to me series since she is an author who will be at NOLA Storycon.

I consistently enjoy her works – the characters, the action, the plots, BUT I always fall for the WRONG guy.  It makes it hard to stay with the series.  This doesn’t happen so much with other authors but so far it has happened with both of her series.  Well, this Prospero’s War series isn’t complete, although the author is uncertain as to when more books will be available. And maybe there is hope for my guy? She is just horrible to him.

The last thing patrol cop Kate Prospero expected to find on her nightly rounds was a werewolf covered in the blood of his latest victim. But then, she also didn't expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of a Magic Enforcement Agency task force, who wants to know why she killed their lead snitch.

The more Prospero learns about the dangerous new potion the MEA is investigating, the more she's convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she's been wanting. But getting the assignment proves much easier than solving the case. Especially once the investigation reveals their lead suspect is the man she walked away from ten years earlier—on the same day she swore she'd never use dirty magic again.

Kate Prospero's about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should be never say never

I listened to this on a long car trip and I really enjoyed it. It has magic which is a favorite of mine. Kate, the main character is a cop and pretty kick-ass. She has worked hard over the years to build her career while raising her younger brother. There’s lots of action and big changes happening in Dirty Magic.

Morgan Hallett has done a great job of capturing the characters style and giving me the feel of their emotions with her narration. She made it clear for me which character was speaking with the voices. It was easy to listen to the audiobook and very well done.

When a rare Blue Moon upsets the magical balance in the city, Detective Kate Prospero and her Magical Enforcement colleagues pitch in to help Babylon PD keep the peace. Between potions going haywire and everyone's emotions running high, every cop in the city is on edge. But the moon's impact is especially strong for Kate who's wrestling with guilt over falling off the magic wagon.

After a rogue wizard steals dangerous potions from the local covens, Kate worries their suspect is building a dirty magic bomb. Her team must find the anarchist rogue before the covens catch him, and make sure they defuse the bomb before the Blue Moon deadline. Failure is never an option, but success will require Kate to come clean about her secrets.

In Cursed Moon, there is another big case with dirty magic and murder causing mayhem. Kate is berating herself over recent choices because she is holding to her young ideals set a decade in the past. She is very rigid with herself. This is somewhat annoying as is her treatment of some of her allies and friends. I enjoyed the plot and the mystery and action. Morgan Hallett continues to perform well.

Rookie cop Kate Prospero only has one more training assignment to pass before she's officially sworn in to Babylon Police Department. But the veteran cop in charge of the river patrol boat is a salty old guy isn't happy about playing tour guide to a rookie and seems even less interested in real police work. But while on patrol, they stumble on to what appears to be a floating dirty magic lab. This highly combustible situation might finally be the key to these two unlikely partners finding common ground.

Fire Water is a quick little novella about Kate in her early days as a rookie cop. She succeeds with determination and perseverance. It is set in a timeframe before the Prospero’s War series.

After the grisly murder of a dirty magic coven leader, Kate Prospero and The Magical Enforcement Agency team up with the local police to find the killer. But as the infighting between covens turns ugly, an all-out war brews in the slums of Babylon.

When a tenacious reporter sticks her nose in both the investigation and Prospero's past in the covens, old ghosts resurface. The team will have to use all the weapons in their arsenal to stop the coven war and find the killer before the case brings down all their careers - and their lives.

Finally, Kate starts to grow and learn in Deadly Spells. She begins adapting her life to the current world and situations. Kate is having to realize the world is not black and white, with layers of gray providing more difficult choices. She also has the twist of learning the past she believed was a lie.

Sadly, she still is treating “my guy” like shit, even though he states plainly he loves her. He’s not perfect but nobody is.

The series is not complete and it will be interesting to see where things go from here. The changes here set the groundwork for a new outlook for the series.

  1. I have this series on my TBR list. I tried the audio for the first book and couldn’t get past chapter three because of the narrator. I think when I try it again I’ll read it.

I loved the dark humor that Jaye used in her Sabina Kane series and I’ve met her in person at two different book cons and she’s a hoot.

    • Jennifer – Really? I can understand about the narrator because some work and some don’t I guess. But I liked her. I’ve used audio to get to a book I couldn’t read and have not gone the other way yet – reading the book when I couldn’t work with the audio. I’ve also noticed when a narrator is in one series if I identify too closely with that character, it’s hard to hear them with another character / series.

      • It is hard to listen to a narrator do another series if you have them in your head as a character. That’s why I can’t listen to Lorelei King narrate the Mercy Thomspon series. For me, King is Charley Davidson.

But yeah I couldn’t get into the narrator. She kind of bored me. But if you ask around other audio listners, I’m known as being peaky. LOL

    • Melissa – It is a fun series. It’s very sassy, somewhat dark and gritty. But I liked it. Except I like the guy she won’t give a chance. Why do I torture myself over the bad boys? smh Anne
