This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre.

What else would I choose for February, with Valentine’s Day, than Contemporary Romance?  I can’t seem to limit myself to 5 series here either.  Now to be clear – this is Contemporary, we will do Romantic Suspense (another of my favorites), Paranormal Romance, Fantasy Romance, Romantic Comedy, Historical Romance and other Romance genres in other months.

My favorite Contemporary Romance series are (in author alphabetical name order):

Green Mountain by Marie Force            New York by Ruthie Knox                     Knitting in the City by Penny Reid

(now Butler series)                                     (also Camelot series)                            (also Winston Brothers series)

Burnside by Mary Ann Rivers              Whiskey Creek by Brenda Novak         Lucky Harbor by Jill Shalvis

—————————————-             (also Silver Springs)                      (also Animal Magnetism, Heartbreaker Bay…)

  1. It’s so funny, I have something similar planned for tomorrow, Anne 🙂 A friend of mine asked for recs in romance, but different sub-genres. And I was all I can do at least 10-15 posts on that, thank you!
My favorite contemporary romance series – I love Lucky Harbor by Jill Shalvis, and Whiskey Creek by Brenda Novak. I also love Victoria Dahl’s ‘Jackson – Girls’ Night Out’ series, Shalvis’ Heartbreaker Bay and others.
You have some fantastic series mentioned here. I guess I really need to start reading Marie Force, yeah?

    • There are many sub genres and even certain tropes are almost a genre. I’ll have to take a look at Victoria Dahl. With Marie Force, I only like certain series. So far I love the Green Mountain, Butler VT series I highlighted here and her Fatal series which is romantic suspense.

Contemporary Romance is a genre that I rarely read. I do plan on trying Jill Shalvis one day. She sounds like she has my kind of humor. I even have book one in the Animal Magnetism series on audio (with a favorite narrator in Karen White). If I had to pick a favorite Contemporary Romance, I would have to say Original Sinners by Tiffany Reisz. I’m not that it really fits into that category. There isn’t a couple that comes together in each story, but there are several romances and we get deeper into each couple’s story more throughout the series.

    • I liked that series too. But yeah it isn’t the typical Girl A meets Boy B and BAM sparks fly. It is more Girl A and Boy B and other dude C and best friend D and sub love E and sub sex F and consenting adults can do whatever they like G

Its more erotica than just romance and you have to be okay with the sharing of it.

  3. I’ve read some Molly O’Keefe and liked it, but it has been awhile. There are multiple series by Jill Shalvis and Brenda Novak which I love. Another author who is quickly becoming an auto-read is JT Geissinger. Another I’ve enjoyed for a long time is Shannon Stacey. OK, how much time do you have?

  4. For contemporary romance Kristen Ashley is my go to girl. But she isn’t for everyone. Her males are uber alpha and sometimes the dialogue is ridiculous but I love her none the less and have read almost all of her series.

Lauren Layne is another favorite of mine. Her Love, Sex and Stiletto series is fantastic and everyone of them like a chick flick in my head. I also enjoyed the male spin off to that the Men of Oxford.

    • These are both authors I want to read but haven’t really. I did read and enjoy Kristen Ashley’s Dream Man series, but I want to try the Rock Chick and Colorado series.

Wow – I haven’t read/listened to any of those. I do like Jill Shalvis, both her Animal Magnetism and Heartbreaker Bay series. I’d say one of my favorite contemporary series is the Kowalski Family series by Shannon Stacey. I also love the Wild Seasons series by Christina Lauren, Hudson Valley series by Alice Clayton, and Kinky Bankrobbers series by Annika Martin.

    • I love Shannon Stacey, both the Kowalski family and her newer firefighter series. I might put the Kinky Bank Robbers in erotica? Alice Clayton is definitely Romantic comedy. I WANT to read Christina Lauren – I just haven’t gotten there.

I guess I don’t separate out the genre in that detail. For me, if it takes place in modern times, it’s pretty much contemporary (unless it is suspense/action/military). I can see calling Kinky Bank Robbers erotic romance since it’s a foursome. haha! But for me, the Hudson Valley series falls in contemporary. It’s no more or less humorous than Kowalskis. I’ve not read other Alice Clayton books, so I can’t compare her writing style on a whole.

        • It’s a fine distinction. Sure. It’s a way for me to have more genres and list more books as favorites. 🙂
