Irem, an archivist at the Chicago Field Museum, flies to Italy to be the “best man” in her brother’s wedding. He’s marrying an archaeologist who lures Irem into a centuries-old mystery.
Unfortunately, there are other players in the game, and some of them are playing deadly. Can she survive and uncover the ancient secrets?
The Bone Shroud sounded very interesting with its history, the mystery, and maybe even a bit of romance with a family wedding involved. There are many appealing aspects of the world-building. The setting is Italy. There is history in the making, archaeology, artists and wine. The main character Irem is trained in a martial art, smart, and has a good job as an archivist in Chicago. She travels to Italy for her brother’s wedding. She did not visit previously as she is afraid of flying.
Sadly, I did not connect with Irem. The thoughts in her head were frustrating. She did a few TSTL things and did know better. She had amazing luck on her side. The main issue for me was the other characters not being well developed, which left only Irem most of the time. I also couldn’t believe how she just dismissed any of the local food and wanted to go to McDonalds!
If you can relate to Irem, you may enjoy the mystery. There is certainly suspense as she puts herself in danger repeatedly to solve it.
