This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre.
Fantasy is a newly favorite genre. I thought I only liked Urban Fantasy but it turns out I like Fantasy too! For this month, we are looking at Adult Fantasy not Young Adult. The topic of Young Adult will be another month. That way I have an easier time of narrowing it down to 6 series. I did query my reviewers and have added a few of their favorites.
Our favorite Fantasy series are (in author alphabetical name order):
The Invisible Library series The Dead Seekers, Mist Torn Witches Farseer Trilogy & related series
by Genevieve Cogman by JC & Barb Hendee by Robin Hobb
Grim & Blackthorn, Sevenwaters Uprooted, Spinning Silver Starlight Archive
by Juliet Mariliier by Naomi Novik by Brandon Sanders
What are your favorite series?
Vote for your top 3 favorites! You can vote for my favorites or add favorites of your own to the poll.
Then enter the giveaway below. The winner will get the first book in the winning series! Open to anyone who can receive an Amazon, B&N ebook or internationally is serviced by Book depository.

I have read one or 2 but not many I confess.
As for your question, I’m not sure. I love Sanderson but maybe Kushiel by Jacqueline Carey
I used to avoid it but I’ve found some good ones. I find it easier to listen to some on audio since they are often loooooong books. Uprooted is amazing on audio. I’m also collecting everything by Robin Hobb on audio., I haven’t read Sanderson YET. That came from my people. I trust their judgment. Grim & Blackthorn is just a trilogy and it’s brilliant.
*raises hand* I love almost every Sanderson book I’ve ever read and he spans EPIC/YA/UF genres really well with a little SciFi added in. Plus if you like audiobooks all of the ones he has on Audible are super good, but the ones on Graphic Audio are even better.
I tend to not be into fantasy as much as I am Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. I don’t know why – I think it’s “epic” nature is to long-winded for me, maybe? I do really love Diana Pharaoh Francis though and she wrote this one Fantasy series that was pretty great about sailors – tons of magic and pretty awesome world too. Had to go look up the title – The Crosspointe Chronicles. The first book is called The Cipher. Really recommend her if you like Fantasy – she writes killer Urban Fantasy too 🙂
I tend to be more Urban Fantasy. I think the historical fantasy which is the way I sometimes term epic fantasy or high fantasy, tends to be true to the time period and the treatment and view of women is not .. favorable. Also there is often a focus on religion or politics or its all about the power/money/ego. None of those are appealing. Or it might be the lack of humor. Urban Fantasy is much more likely to be sassy. But the best Fantasy has spirit, sometimes even humor to lighten its darkness.
Blackthorn & Grim are amazing. I love the relationship they have created and the obstacles they have overcome.
yes they are. And many people don’t know anything about them or haven’t read them. It’s heart-breaking.
Well,is combination of paranormal romance and fantasty – my favorite is Dark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon 🙂
I love the Dark Hunters also but I put them in Paranormal romance rather than Fantasy or Urban Fantasy. Fantasy to me is historical and while they use mythology they are not set in history, they are modern day. Urban Fantasy has the same character throughout the series where the Dark Hunters have a new couple in each book, so Paranormal romance in my personal definition. Fantasy Romance is historical with a different couple in each book. We will do all these categories over time. Breaking them into groupings lets me choose 6 for each. If they were all one category I couldn’t possibly choose. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
I love all things Sanderson but I’ve meant to give the Grim & Blackthorn series a try for a long time now.
Ad I’m meaning to give Sanderson a try! Prioritizing the TBR is really tough right now.
All of his Audiobooks are really awesome. He picks some of the best narrators so don’t let the number of hours be too daunting.
OK apparently Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson is YA so only Stormlight Archive should be here. Post updated to reflect this.
I haven’t read any of these. I really like Fantasy, but I don’t read many epic fantasy or high fantasy. Mine tend to lean more towards an Urban Fantasy style, but set in a more fictional world completely different from ours.

Well that was me a few years ago. Then along came Ace Roc and said here, read some fantasy books and boom – I LOVE some of them. I’d recommend you start with Uprooted because it’s amazing, it’s a stellar audio and is so far standalone. It’s like an old fairy tale. Or The Grim & Blackthron triliogy is also first class but I read ebooks for those. The Robin Hobb books are also awesome but looong and their are many, many. I’ve only started on my journey reading them through audio. Each audio is between 26-37 hours.
