When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules--a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home.
When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders--a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman--have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes--and save himself in the process--before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt. From a writer and producer of the Emmy winning Fox TV show Empire, Bluebird, Bluebird is a rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas.

A short review to update challenges

This is another audio which I saw as an audible daily deal and ran right to the library to get it. I enjoy law enforcement books with mystery and murder. Bluebird, Bluebird is set in Texas with a specialized branch of law enforcement – The Texas Rangers.

Dark and gritty, the story explores racial and cultural differences and hate. The hate was disgusting. Murder, in most cases, has some basis in hate or wanting to be a superior power. There were layers with the building of this world and its long-standing prejudices, the personal issues with family and friends, and of course, crimes and cases. It was scary in the power certain people hold which they may or may not use with integrity.

This is only the beginning of the Highway 59 series, and I intend to go along for the drive.

Narration:

I listened comfortably at 1.25 speed. The narration was well performed with some style for the area of the country. It felt right; and it didn’t take me out of the story.

  1. I see you are another Audio book lover. I have to work to resist the Audible Daily Deals. 🙂 I am checking my library … but not until I catch up on NetGalley challenge. 🙂 Happy Listening!

    • yes I am a daily deal addict. I check the library first before I buy. I love audio for when I drive, do chores, over lunch, or knit or sew. Audio has helped me read about 70 additional books a year.
