Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

Magic Rises starts out calm, everything is good in the Keep, until it isn’t. Julie’s best friend has gone loup – at the exact same time as a European trinity of packs asks Curran to come to Georgia to be a body guard. Guarding a woman pregnant with twins – twins with two different fathers – and in exchange, the pack will get enough panacea to keep the youth of the pack safe.

The trip overseas is filled with danger, but the real danger is lurking in the castle. Different pack politics, a very sweet shifter princess offered to Curran, and the most dangerous of opponents is what faces Kate and Curran in this unyielding place.

Magic Rises is filled with action, it got my heart to speed up in many places. Kate continues to be a strong woman, but a woman in love can only take so much, right? Curran should have been better with communication, because he played a long game without letting Kate know the rules, and I felt so bad for her.

This installment also got me crying – sobbing, really – because of reasons. Of course, the writing is excellent, and the character development of absolutely all the characters continues to be strong. A full re-read of the series is still possible before the next book comes out – and I highly recommend it – as I noticed a few new things when I picked Magic Rises up again.

He was the Beast Lord and I was his Consort, which put me in a position of authority over fifteen hundred shapeshifters, the largest pack in the South. I didn’t want the responsibility, and given the choice, I would run as far as I could away from it, but it was the price I had to pay to stay with Curran. I loved him and he was worth it. He was worth everything.

“Boy toy?” Curran asked.

“Would you prefer man candy?”

I elbowed Curran. “Their castle is bigger.”

He winked at me. “Mine is taller. It’s not the size of the castle. It’s what you do with it.”

About Ilona Andrews

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

They have co-authored several bestselling series, including the #1 NYT bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles, which they post as a free weekly serial.

I didn’t read much of the post, because I didn’t want spoilers.

But that cover! It’s so amazing!

  2. Maria Kneipple

I loved the fact that when she finally meets her father, she chooses how to behave I instead of following Voron. I also loved that she steadfastly believed Curran would find her.

I am reading along too but for some unknown reason have decided to re=read out of order….what what

    • Thank you for joining us. I knew I wanted to do a reread so committing to this ensured it would happen,. It’s been awesome, surprising the details I have forgotten.

  4. Sagal

I’ve heard so many good things about this series. I look forward to reading the books for the first time.

    • I would start at the beginning of the series. They are all great and in urban fantasy the story builds throughout all the books. They don’t end on a cliffhanger but there is more to the story than just one book. You have an amazing time ahead.
