Ryhalt Galharrow is a blackwing--a bounty hunter who seeks out and turns over any man, woman, or child who has been compromised by the immortals known as the Deep Kings. Four years have passed since he helped drive the Deep Kings back across the Misery. But new and darker forces are rising against the republic...

The Raven’s Mark series is what I call grimdark. This means there is violence, battles, blood and death. The good times are getting drunk, killing the enemy or winning the battle. Well, there is also loyalty to friends and causes, protecting friends, women and children.

The world is full of magic and those trying to grab power. Many are not honorable. There are upper classes and lower classes.  The military and the best magic users are a bit separate. It’s been four years since the Blackwing crew saved Valengrad. Evil forces are at work, but it is difficult to see exactly what they are trying to do, so it’s more difficult to stop them.

Galharrow is older, more worn, suffering from the loss of Ezabeth who sacrificed herself to save Valengrad the last time.  His previous decisions are also coming back to bite him. The way is treacherous and painful.  Also, the crew does not work as tightly together on this mission. He spends more time alone. I don’t know how many books are planned but I will be interested to see where his journey takes him after Ravencry.

  1. Generally, I gravitate toward Fantasy Romance when I’m in a fantasy mood, but occasionally, I want to go old-school and simple so I grab an iexternal/internal conflict type that just does a good vs. evil theme. This series sounds like it would be good for that. Thanks, Anne!
