Kit Jernigan despairs of ever fitting in with her new tight-knit K9 unit. They've been through too much to open their arms to a stranger―and as mysterious fires begin raging across Monroe, she can't convince them to trust her long enough to catch the woman she knows is responsible.

Wesley March, local fire spotter, knows Kit is right, and he's willing to help her prove it. But the more time they spend together, the closer they get...and the more danger they're in. A member of the K9 unit's inner circle is determined to get revenge―no matter who gets burned in the process.

This time, it's personal.

Here we are at the end of the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series.   Through the Fire is probably my favorite.  It could be because we get to see everyone from the previous books a bit. It might be because a bunch of overall series arcs were tied up.  But I think it is because the main character for this story is female.

Kit is new to the area, although she has been a cop for 8 years in Wisconsin. She is also a K9 officer with a blood hound partner. She meets a geeky guy, and there’s math involved!!!, on her first day in town. Wes is a fire watcher. I really loved both these characters.

Kit has so much happening and the other officers are suspicious of anyone new. Her connection with Wes is immediate. He’s adorkable and smart. I LOVED his conversations with his sister. The slow and steady way they get to know each other is great!

The murder case starts on Kit’s first day and she’s trying to learn how things work and get settled. We get another round of gun-loving, anti-government folks. We also get a much smaller dose of the kids I love. I wish they had been a little more involved but it was appropriate for this story.

I listened to the first book Run to Ground and have read the following books, until listening to this one on audio again.  I would say either is great, but it also seems my favorite books in the series are the ones I listened to the audio version.

Narration:

I listened at my usual 1.25x speed and it worked well for me. The narration of both male and female voices was comfortable, and even the kids sounded right. There was enough variation to capture different people. We get both Kit and Wes’ point of view but it seems like somewhat more from Kit. The performance really added the emotional timbre to the story and increased my enjoyment.

About Katie Ruggle

A fan of the old adage “write what you know”, Katie Ruggle lived in an off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains until her family lured her back to Minnesota. When she’s not writing, Katie rides horses, shoots guns (not while riding, although that would be awesome), cross-country skis (badly) and travels to warm places where she can scuba dive. A graduate of the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. A fan of anything that makes her feel like a bad-ass, she has trained in Krav Maga, boxing and gymnastics.

  1. It was great how she wrapped it up and I thought Kit was a fab heroine, too. Her hounds was adorable. I’m looking forward to Steve’s story now and trying not to miss that the series is over.

    • It’s true, Laura! As I read them, each one felt like my favorite! I just really enjoyed Jules’ siblings, and a female main character Kit, as well as the adorkable nerd Wes. That’s why I say they are my favorites.

I really enjoyed this one too. I was a bit frustrated with Kit not trusting in her partners, but I knew them better than she did, and with her past, I guess I understand. The kids are still the best part of this series.
