This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre.
The genre here, by my definition, is series about Witches or Wizards. It seemed like a good precursor to Halloween. Magic is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to supernaturals. I did get input from the rest of the team but I chose things I enjoy. Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. It’s interesting to me they come from different genres: urban fantasy, fantasy and space opera. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My favorite Witches & Wizards series are (in no particular order):
Harry Potter series Harry Dresden series The Hollows series
by JK Rowling by Jim Butcher by Kim Harrison
The Mist-Torn Witches series All Souls trilogy Starship’s Mage series
by Barb Hendee by Deborah Harkness by Glynn Stewart

My favorite series that has witches and wizards in it, even though they’re not the focus of the stories, is Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series.
The books have great characters and world building, and they’re well-written and have wonderful character interaction.
It’s my favorite series too. But I was focusing on series here where Witches or Wizards are the main character.
My all-time favorite is the Harry Potter series. I love the world-building and watching the characters as they grow up.
Well I can’t argue with that love. I really enjoy all of these. They are different too. I like variety.
LOVE Dresden… and the other Harry! haha. Two Harries! I’m trying to think what other Witch/Wizard books I’ve read. I’ve recently discovered a couple paranormal cozy mystery series (Beechwood Harbor and Southern Charms) that both have witches as the main characters. I’ve read lots with magic in them (like Elemental Assassins, Kate Daniels, etc.) but they have so much more.
Yes, the first two series I purchased on audio – Harry Potter and Harry Dresden. Yes, I was trying to choose only ones with witches, wizards or mages as the main character for this particular post. It’s fun to think about all the different kinds of magic.
I’m a huge fan of Harry Dresden and Rachel Morgan (I’m doing a relisten of this series right now). I also really love the All Souls Trilogy. I highly recommend it. I listened to the audios, which has a great narrator.

Yay. I’m a huge fan of audio when it’s a narrator I enjoy. I enjoy most of them but some series I just need to read. I can read faster. And I don’t seem to be able to listen at anything faster than 1.5x usually only 1.25x. I do come back to a reread with audio sometimes also.
Of these, I listened to the Harrys and recommend them both on audio. I read the Hollows and Mist-Torn and Discovery of Witches. I did a mix of half and half with the Starship’s Mage and liked both.
