Warning: This dark urban fantasy contains scenes of violence. Reader discretion is advised.

Waking with horrific injuries in a hospital, Adara can’t recall her past. Who is she? And more importantly what is she? Her only hints come during her nightmares.

Dark dreams that are forgotten when she wakes.

Having amnesia doesn’t stop danger from stalking her. She attracts the attention of a werewolf and a vampire. As events spiral out of control she wonders if she’s losing her mind.
Magic and supernatural beings can’t exist.

Her mind says ‘Forget.’

But she wants to remember. However, if she does, will the truth shatter her?

I’ve been a huge fan of Eve Langlais for many years now, I think it goes back to like 2010 or so. I’ve read so many books by Eve (according to Goodreads, I’ve read 67 of her books, but some might be different editions of the same book, like print versus audiobook). Anyway, I really like Eve (and she’s even more fun in person. If you can go to a book con she’s at, please do look her up, you won’t regret it).

Eve Langlais is one of my top go-to authors when I want a laugh. Imagine my surprise when I go to Goodreads to add this book to my TBR list and I see a bold warning at the top of the blurb; “Warning: This dark urban fantasy contains scenes of violence. Reader discretion is advised.” This struck me as odd and made me even more interested in trying this book. I’m a big fan of dark stories (I seem to go from dark and depressing to hilarious stories. They seem to balance each other out). I couldn’t wait to see what my funny author would do with a dark story.

Adara has amnesia. She is recently out of the hospital and in living in a bad area and working in a worse one, during the evening shift closing the comic book by herself. It is almost as if someone is trying to get her killed. Then she gets attacked by zombies. Luckily, a certain alpha werewolf comes to clean up the zombie mess and saves her.

Logan, the above mentioned alpha werewolf, has an instant and strange attraction to Adara. His wolf is very interested. But he’s also very interested in finding out who she is. She doesn’t share much information. He is also very hesitant to show her what he is.

Titus is a master vampire. He hears Adara’s mental cries of agony when she’s sleeping and having nightmares. He knows she’s not fully human, but has no idea what she is. He also knows he can’t bear her mental cries.

There is also the hint of romance. Nothing has really started yet, as the first priority is to get Adara out of trouble. But there is definitely something there. The question becomes, which man will win her over (or will she end up with both. It wouldn’t be the first time for Eve to have more than two people in a relationship together). There is a strong battle between Logan and Titus and jealousy too.

So, this story is much darker than Eve’s normal stories (but not as dark as many of the other stories I’ve read, but I think the warning is good for people who are used to this author). She really has me intrigued with this story. We learn a lot about Adara throughout the book, but I think it ends with more questions than what we learn. I must learn more.

Narration
This is my first book with Amy Melissa Bentley. I have to say she’s done a great job. The cast isn’t very large, but  she did very well with the mostly male cast. She gave a good performance with the dark topics and really put the emotions of the characters in their voice. Her pace and tone were well done. I would listen to her again and will continue this series on audio.

Listen to a clip.

About Eve Langlais

Author: Eve Langlais

~ New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author

Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .

I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane…with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.

  1. I’ve never tried anything by the author but I too have favorites like this where I read EVERYTHING they write. This sounds like it is totally in my wheelhouse. I hate love triangles but I don’t mind polyamorous couplings so this could be a win for me.

    Great review Melanie.

This is the first story that I’ve read from Eve that wasn’t a humorous book. She’s so funny when she writes and in person. I wasn’t sure how this one would be, but I really enjoyed it.

I’m a huge Eve Langlais fan. She writes a lot of humor into her stories (comparable to Molly Harper), but this i book is something completely different from her. This is much darker and grittier than what I’ve read in the past (though not as dark as some of the books I know you’ve read, but still pretty dark for this author). It is a great new series from her and I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

  2. aww…I love this author too and have been reading her for quite some time. I am really behind on many of her books but if I ever need a good laugh I grab her up. And lately I have enjoyed the darker elements in romances lately.

I love Eve too. She writes great stories. She really showed her ability to change direction and write something besides snark. This one is darker and still as much fun, just a different kind of fun. 🙂
