Keep a spot open on your dance card. This is one ball you don't want to miss.

Grier is nursing a broken heart after Boaz announced his engagement to another woman, but life goes on. Or it would if vampire assassins would stop taking pot shots at her every time she leaves Woolworth House. Seriously, who sends archers to deliver murdergrams these days?

To protect herself, Grier must pull out all the stops, even if it means revealing her darkest secret. All eyes are on her, and—for the first time—she begins to understand why Linus wears so many masks. But the target isn’t Grier, and when the archers single him out, it feels like one of their arrows might have struck what remains of her heart.

I have really enjoyed every book in the Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy series , and have been fortunate to listen to them all on audio.  They are all on Kindle Unlimited as well So I am trying to do a review without too many spoilers, and not just repeat the blurb.

Throughout this series, Grier has been building up her adult life, learning to live on her own and develop her skills. It hasn’t been easy because she is often so alone and friends often aren’t really friends or do things to betray her.   I have never been a fan of Boaz and I am not happy with him in How to Dance an Undead Waltz either.

She finally has a teacher, in Linus, but can he be trusted?  It’s hard for anyone because if you let them in they can hurt you. Linus has been amazing and I’m really rooting for him.  He understands gets Grier and is letting her see him. Plus he is always encouraging and praises her skills. People are out to kill them, so they began to protect each other. I love that Grier is able to better defend them now after some training and practice of her skills.

Throughout Grier has also been slowly learning about her mother and now we learn a bit more about her father.  Plus there’s a breakthrough which lets us learn more about Maud and her plans for Grier.  Grier is starting to recall more in her dreams of the night Maud died, so we may learn more about it in the future also.

I LOVE the development in this story and how much time she gets to spend with Linus.  Some of the problems are figured out and somewhat resolved, but there is more ahead.  I can’t wait!!!    How to Live An Undead Lie is projected for January 1, 2019.

Narration:

I continue to enjoy Rebecca Mitchell as Grier and also as Linus.  The other characters aren’t as important to me, so other than Oscar, I didn’t notice them so much.  She does a nice job with Neely too.  I listened at my usual 1.25x speed.  I loved this one and listened as much and as often as possible.

About Hailey Edwards

Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy. She lives in Alabama with her husband, their daughter, and a herd of dachshunds.

    • I say the same thing when I read your reviews Jonetta! This one I had seen a few book reviews since it was on KU. But I happened to get it as the first in a series UF from Tantor. I sometimes just pick one which is new to me. About the same time I started seeing multiple positive reviews from Angela (Guilty Pleasures), Kimberly (Caffeineated) and Jen (Red Hot Books) to name a few. I think most of them read it, maybe in KU. Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About just reviewed the first audio.

I’m a little behind as I waited for the audio but it is SO good. I’m just enjoying it. I love the adventures and with only a touch of romance (and not focusing on romance).

Thanks Jonetta. I hope you try them and enjoy them too.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this review, Anne and – at the risk of sounding like a cracked record – I MUST get organised with audiobooks!

  2. This was one of the series that I didn’t get to when I was doing my KU trial. I’ve got it on the list for the next time I do KU.

    • Thank you! I read both the Kate Daniels and the Charley Davidson series before I became an avid audio listener. So I got to enjoy them both on audio for the re-read. It is shocking how many things I didn’t remember and I was able to love them all over again. So take heart, and listen to them 2-3 years down the road.
