For the airline executives finalizing a merger that would make news in the business world, the nine a.m. meeting would be a major milestone. But after marketing VP Paul Rogan walked into the plush conference room, strapped with explosives, the headlines told of death and destruction instead. The NYPSD’s Eve Dallas confirms that Rogan was cruelly coerced by two masked men holding his family hostage. His motive was saving his wife and daughter―but what was the motive of the masked men?

Despite the chaos and bad publicity, blowing up one meeting isn’t going to put the brakes on the merger. All it’s accomplished is shattering a lot of innocent lives. Now, with the help of her billionaire husband Roarke, Eve must untangle the reason for an inexplicable act of terror, look at suspects inside and outside both corporations, and determine whether the root of this crime lies in simple sabotage, or something far more complex and twisted.

A short review to update challenges

I love the  In Death series.  The characters have become beloved to me, and their circle of friends with comfortable connections. The police procedural and mystery aspect is always interesting for me.   In addition to mystery, there is the personal growth.  Their quirky styles and humor make me so happy.  There’s nothing realistic about the stories but the characters’ emotions.

The plot was rather suspenseful since the potential for deaths was so high and for so many innocents.  Eve and Roarke got a handle on the psychology of it very quickly. They narrowed down the list with factors they identified successfully, especially with another murder adding evidence.

Leverage In Death is number 47 so you have plenty to read and binge.  They never disappoint. I am always thrilled to settle down with the next book.  While the books are not short, they are quick to read because they are so pleasurable. Highly recommended.

Eve looked down at the finger painting. A castle-house, Roarke, a fat cat, and, okay, Somshit.

About J. D. Robb

With a phenomenal career full of bestsellers, Nora Roberts was ready for a new writing challenge. As her agent put it, like Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and caffeine-free Pepsi, a pseudonym offered her the opportunity to reach a new and different group of readers. The first futuristic suspense J. D. Robb book, Naked in Death, was published in paperback in 1995, and readers were immediately drawn to Eve Dallas, a tough cop with a dark past, and her even more mysterious love interest, Roarke.

The series quickly gained attention, great reviews, and devoted readers. Since the debut of Loyalty in Death (the ninth In Death book) on Halloween 1999 on the New York Times bestseller list, every J. D. Robb title has been a New York Times bestseller. While fans had their suspicions, it wasn’t until the twelfth book in the series, Betrayal in Death (2001), that the publisher fully revealed that J. D. Robb was a pseudonym for bestselling powerhouse Nora Roberts. Unmasked, Nora Roberts fans who hadn’t yet picked up one of the Robb books were quickly playing catch-up.

Robb’s peers in the mystery world are fans as well, with accolades for the In Death series from such blockbuster authors as Stephen King, Jonathan Kellerman, Dennis Lehane, Kathy Reichs, Lisa Scottoline, Janet Evanovich, David Baldacci, Harlan Coben, Robert B. Parker, Ridley Pearson, Linda Fairstein, and Andrew Gross.

The In Death books are perpetual bestsellers, and frequently share the bestseller list with other Nora Roberts novels. J. D. Robb publishes two hardcover In Death books per year, with the occasional stand-alone original In Death story featured in an anthology.

Over forty books and fifteen years later, there is no end in sight for the ever-popular In Death series.

  1. I’ve just read the 21st offering and LOVED it, so I am heartened that book number 47 is still excellent. My goodness that woman works! Thank you for an enjoyable review?

  2. I actually bought a bunch of audiobooks from this series earlier this year and hope to start slowly working my way through the series. Glad you are still enjoying the series 47 books in!

    • I started devouring them many years ago and now I just get to keep up with the 2-3 books a year. They are somewhat longish but so good, so exciting they are a fast read. I can’t recommend them highly enough. I don’t listen because although the narrator is good, she is in my head as belonging to another series so she sounds too old to be Eve. Sad. It happens sometimes.

    • Well I would suggest just trying the first one and then fitting in 1-2 a month that’s the strategy I took with Harry Dresden, Cork O’Connor series and Robin Hobb’s Assassin apprentice as well as Thrones of Glass series. It worked better with the first 2 series but I have hopes to get further along in the other 2 series soon. The only one I am now up to date is Harry Dresden. It’s frustrating because I know I have these great books waiting but I have new ARCs and books that meet challenge criteria waiting. There are reasons I do the challenges though because for example, if I didn’t do HoHoHoRAT I’m not sure I’d ever read so many of the Christmas freebies I have. All in good time. Good luck. But they are FANTASTIC!

  3. I’ve read thirty something of these-not sure-and loved them and the characters every time. I have the next two laying on the table gathering dust and just haven’t gotten back into them. I miss the whole gang-can’t get enough of Peabody as well as Eve and Roark!
