After fleeing her beloved small town five years ago, Julia Bailey is back to spend Christmas with her family. Returning is hard, but keeping the devastating secret about her late husband is even harder. Her place isn't in Big Sky Country any longer...but the more time she spends with the irresistible Sheriff who saved her once before, and his adorable little daughter, the more Julia starts wishing she could let go of the past and start a new life.
Single dad and county Sheriff Chase Donovan had been secretly in love with his best friend's wife for years. But after her traumatic loss he knew Julia needed to get away from Shadow Creek, even though helping her leave was the last thing he wanted to do. Now she's home and he doesn't intend to lose her a second time. Chase is going to prove to Julia just how good they can be together this Christmas...and forever.

A short review to update challenges
This holiday romance is the first in the Shadow Creek Montana series. While Christmas with the Sheriff is quite short, the characters are well drawn, mostly authentic and enjoyable. Julia comes home to visit her in-laws for the first time after being widows 5 years ago. Both the emotional story and the career aspects are rather realistic.
Julia has known Chase for much of her life, so it is not surprising they are close, or how they spend time together now. Maggie is a great small addition to the story. The connection of family and long-time friends adds to this heartwarming romance. The ending gives me ideas about the next one in the series. I’d like to read more.

This is one of my favorite series! Glad you enjoyed, Anne.
Yes, this is just the first one. I saw you had reviewed a later one. It’s one of the better romances I read this week.
Oh, this sounds wonderful. I’m so in the mood for some holiday romance:)
This whole series looked Christmasy or wintery at least to me. My favorite one for HoHoHoRAT so far is Rocky Mountain Cowboy Christmas by Katie Ruggle. It’s set in CO and this one is MT. Both have great family groups.
I love Katie Ruggle’s books. And that book sounds familiar. Need to check my pile of holiday reads! I’m reading some more of Lauren Carr’s books now. She has great family groups that mix into each series.
Ooh, this sounds emotional but it says a lot about VJames that she managed to flesh out her characters so well in such a short book. I’ll have to check this one out, Anne.
Exactly! I want character development! I’ve read very short stories which still defined the characters well. It makes all the difference to me.
