The sheriff's deputy at the front door brings hard news to Ree Dolly. Her father has skipped bail on charges that he ran a crystal meth lab, and the Dollys will lose their house if he doesn't show up for his next court date.

Ree's father has disappeared before. The Dolly clan has worked the shadowy side of the law for generations, and arrests (and attempts to avoid them) are part of life in Rathlin Valley. With two young brothers depending on her and a mother who's entered a kind of second childhood, 16-year-old Ree knows she has to bring her father back, dead or alive. She has grown up in the harsh poverty of the Ozarks and learns quickly that asking questions of the rough Dolly clan can be a fatal mistake. But along the way to a shocking revelation, Ree discovers unforeseen depths in herself and in a family network that protects its own at any cost.

A short review to update challenges

This came to my attention as an Audible daily deal. It was available at the library so I put it on hold.  It came up this week when I was in the middle of too many contemporary romances as part of HoHoHo Readathon. I thought – yeah mystery, crime, serial killers!  It has Winter in the title so it counts, right?

While the story is its own, the feel reminds me completely of Justified. The lawless families who have very little and no way out of the life. Ree Dolly is in charge with a mentally ill mother and 2 young brothers. At 16, she has already grown up too fast. Her daddy’s latest stunt just pushes her along the path with a big shove. Ree really shows us what she is made of. This world is dark, gritty and sad.

Narration:

Emma Galvin did well with all the voices. The flavor is a less educated, back woods person. I listened at a typical 1.25 speed.

    • Yes there was a movie and yes it is akin to horror. I just looked at the winter theme and the mystery / crime aspect and thought I’m sick of romances – yay serial killers. It’s not serial killers exactly but killers.

    • I’m sorry I don’t know not having seen the movie. The book was brutal, reminded me so much of Justified if you ever saw that. Although, there was no real law enforcement character developed in this one. Raylan is a main character in Justified.
