Sheriff Joanna Brady’s best intentions to stay on maternity leave take a hit when a serial homicide case rocks Cochise County, dragging her into a far-reaching investigation to bring down a relentless killer in this chilling tale of suspense from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance.

This time Sheriff Joanna Brady may expect to see her maternity leave through to completion, but the world has other plans when a serial homicide case surfaces in her beloved Cochise County. Rather than staying home with her newborn and losing herself in the cold cases to be found in her father’s long unread diaries, Joanna instead finds herself overseeing a complex investigation involving multiple jurisdictions.

Filled with the beloved characters, small town charm, vivid history, intriguing mystery, and the scenic Arizona desert backdrop that have made the Joanna Brady series perennial bestsellers, this latest entry featuring the popular sheriff is sure to please J. A. Jance’s legion of fans.

I have read all three series by J.A. Jance for a long time.  This Joanna Brady series, is now to 18 books.  Field of Bones was a complete joy.   There is a wealth of plot layers here with Joanna’s reelection campaign, the birth of her third child,  Butch’s book tour, her maternity leave, and a serial killer homicide case.

The personal aspects are enjoyable as it gives a full definition of the character and her values and choices.  It also feels more authentic. During her maternity leave, Joanna ends up reading some of her father’s old journals which lets us take a walk into her family past.

The serial killer case is quite horrific. The victims are kept for a length of time and their treatment is unconscionable. I love the police procedures and evidence collected which allows the case to be solved. It is a suspenseful process as we get some of the victim’s point of views. I shed some tears here.

I love this series so much. I’ve read many; I’ve listened to the last few on audio.  It’s been great for me in every way.

Narration:

I’ve always enjoyed Hilary Huber. Perhaps because her voice is so comfortable to me, I was able to listen at 1.5x speed.  I’m well settled into hearing her as Joanna Brady, although the other voices, male, female and children, are well performed, also.  She really let me feel the emotions of this story.

    • Thanks. I’ve read all 3 series and this one might be my favorite. I started with the Beaumont one. It’s good but had some elements which got less realistic. The Ali Reynolds one also has some less everyday aspects; the last few had some AI stuff which I love. I liked them all, read them all.

  1. Wonderful review, Anne! I started this series years ago and had to put it aside because it was too graphic for me at the time. I may try again at some point because it’s really popular and maybe my reading tastes have changed a little/I can tolerate more.
