When adrenaline runs high, so does the force of desire…

For Shay Appleton, it’s love at first sight when a gorgeous stray dog is brought into the animal shelter where she works. She just knows he’ll make a terrific watch dog—and with an abusive ex who won’t let go, she needs all the protection she can get. But Shay never suspected that her new pet is actually a trained police K-9 named Bogart—until Bogart’s even more gorgeous, human partner shows up on her doorstep.

Officer James Cannon is one tall, strong alpha male who’s convinced that Shay stole his dog. But once he gets closer to the suspect, he realizes that this stubborn, independent woman not only needs a guard dog, she needs James as well. It seems that someone from her past is stalking her, and threatening her life. When danger meets desire, will James risk his career and his best friend…to protect the woman who’s stolen his heart?

This book has been on my TBR list for what seems like forever. Every time I saw another review for a book in this series, I wanted to start it. But for whatever reason, I never got around to it. I even had a copy of this audiobook for a while. I’m a fan of Romantic Suspense and I love when pets are secondary characters in the story. So this series is right up my alley. Add to that, I’m a fan of the narrator, Jeffrey Kafer, so it was win-win for me.

Shay Appleton adopts a dog that comes through the shelter. He seems like he would be a great guard dog to protect her from an abusive ex. That is until she learns the dog actually does have an owner, Officer James Cannon.

I really loved Prince/Bogart, the Belgian Malinois police dog. He was a sweet dog with good instincts. I would’ve loved if he was a larger part of the story. Yes, he is the reason these two come together, but that’s where he mostly was left. I was kinda expecting him to have a larger role.

Both the hero and heroine of this story have really bad ex’s. Shay’s ex-boyfriend is a stalker and into physical and mental abuse. James’ ex-girlfriend only wanted someone who would look good on her arm and help her news show ratings. The drama between the ex’s and the hero and heroine were a bit tiresome. I wasn’t a fan of this part of the story. For both of them, the ex’s made me have less respect for the hero/heroine for not seeing it sooner. Both of them seemed to stay in the relationships longer because it was easier than trying to end it.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty good start to a new series. I will be looking to continue the series. I will also be continuing on audio (I’m sure you’re all surprised).

Narration
As I said, I’ve been a fan of Jeffrey Kafer ever since I first listen to him narrate a book more two years ago. He’s great at every genre I’ve listened to him read. He does great job with the male and female characters. I think his pace and tone are always spot on. If you haven’t given Jeffrey Kafer a try, I highly recommend him.

  1. This is a series on my list to read, too. You’re right! Sometimes the ex thing can take over a story in romances when they are so mean and vindictive that you can’t imagine how the person was dumb enough to tolerate that relationship. LOL

Love Kafer’s work in a couple sci-fi I’ve listened to.

  2. I have a bunch of series like that, that I keep meaning to start, but never seem to get around to actually doing so. I also like stories where pets are side characters. It sounds like a good read. I’ll have to look up that narrator and listen to a sample by him to see if I like his narration.
