Sunday Post – 9 December 2018 @kimbacaffeinate @readingreality @Tynga

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly  @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received.

Stacking The Shelves is also a weekly meme hosted by  Tynga’s Reviews and Marlene from Reading Reality.  It’s all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.

Usually I do some writing here during the week and tonight I left it to the last minute and now I’m tired. There were 4 medical appointments this week.  The weather was fair 40-50.  Friday, I worked hard to get all the leaves to the street for the city pickup and I felt my back a bit this morning. It was a nice day.  I ran all my errands and it was crazy, with the snow predicted this weekend.

It’s supposed to snow tonight, not much here. I’m not really worried about me driving in snow with my years of Minnesota experience but other people don’t have a clue. So I’m staying home.  I did make gluten-free lasagna for the first time tonight. I had even found GF french bread so I fixed it up as garlic bread. I’m in a carb coma.  I’m making chili and cornbread tomorrow night.

I actually did some knitting and finished a slouch hat for my daughter. I also watched 2 episodes of Daredevil on Netflix which is the first tv I’ve watched in 6-8 months I think. Usually, I listen to audiobooks. I’m getting organized for the next project but I can’t find the yarn I want. I did a big sort in April and everything is organized by fiber and weight but I can’t find it.  So now I am inventorying the contents of each tote, labeling it, and then entering that label in the field Stored  in Ravelry. In the future, I’ll be able to go that yarn in the stash, look at that field and say – oh it’s in the 1-RED tote.  It’s pretty quick to do since they are already well organized now.

On the blog, I’ve finished my December ARCs and I have read all but ONE of my non-current ARCs.  I’m kind of reading what I want this month since there aren’t as many new releases. There are so many audiobooks I want to read.  And I love COYER as always. I’m trying to read all my freebies published in 2018 for next week’s Thrifty Thursday post.

The past few years I’ve done the Top 10 of the Year with a blog who doesn’t seem to be doing it this year?  Has anyone seen that meme with a week of posts?  If not, I think I’ll make my own version.

Read-along:

So every year I like to do a Read-along with giveaways and games, posting reviews.  I’ve done The Hollows by Kim Harrison and last year I did Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews.  I had not read the Hollows but I had read Ilona Andrews.    I like to find a series with 9-12 books, that has both ebook and audio formats. I like it when there are novellas since they make a fun giveaway we might not buy for ourselves.

I posted a vote for this with the Blogaversary post and did not get much response.  I wanted to choose a series I had not yet read this time.  Based on the criteria,  I have decided to do an urban fantasy series: Alex Verus by Benedict Jacka.  I hope you will all join me.  There are both ebook and audios which are available at my libraries and also are not to expensive if I chose to buy them. There are currently 9 books with the 10th one coming out in June!   The Read-along will start January 4, with one book per month.  Please join me.

I have also decided the 2020 Read-along will be the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs as there are 11 books after this year and number 12 will probably come out mid 2021. I’ll want a reread of this excellent series.

How do I fix it?

I have so many questions to fix up things on the blog. Many are graphics oriented since I am graphics challenged. So I will ask a questions here each week and see if you have any suggestions to help me. Also if you have any questions, ask in the comments and I will try to answer or ask your questions.

Another problem area is Facebook.  There are a couple issues here.

First one started with a mistake.  When setting up the page, I typed Books In My Heart; I was trying out different names to figure out what I wanted.  I deleted it. But it’s still there when I got to share posts and things. How do I get rid of it?

Second problem is, of course, graphics.  I would swear I used to be able to control them better on facebook, like create a collage.  I’d like to be able to put them throughout the post not just all in a lump. Is that possible?  Or do you have to learn their programming language to do it?

Update:  I didn’t get very far with this question this week.  For the second problem, it looks like you can’t control it. The best possibility I can see is to create an entire post (text and graphics layout in something like Canva and then post it as all one image.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality.  These are the exciting ARCs I received this week:

The True Queen                               Circle of the Moon

True Places

I see there is a new Audible sale with 50% off for Members this week!

Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT  they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

If you like this and want to see me do the Sunday post, as often as I can manage, leave me a comment and let me know.

Anne

  1. I’m not a knitter, but I can see how keeping the yarn organized and having an inventory list would be helpful. My SIL uses Ravelry, too. I’m sure she’ll love the hat just in time for the cold weather. Glad you are able to sample some more recipes. Oh yes, dragging the leaf bins out to the road had me a bit sore last month, too. Yeah, I’ll bet you’re reading for the snowy weather after living in MN, but you’re right about it being the other guy on the road that is problematic. 🙂

Your series read sounds fun, but I’ll be skipping to do my own because I am determined to get through the books that I bought or were given to me that are languishing on my shelf. I’ll be interested to get your thoughts for a future possibility though. 🙂
I have 3 audios from November and 1 December ARC that need to be finished by the end of the year. The audios didn’t show up until after their releases so I don’t see myself as technically behind, but I also don’t want to wait too long on them. COYER reads are also a big priority for me, too.

    Have a good week, Anne!

    • I’m scattered all over the place this morning. I’m doing laundry, a bit of computer time. I want to get out in the snow to shovel off the driveway and continue the yarn documentation. I’m going to make chili and cornbread. I write and setup some posts.

Yes the audios often come later than the ebooks for the ARCs so you are correct. I have some of those which are older also, but I am working them. It’s mostly the Deathstalkers I have which are older.

Are you doing some 2019 ARCS for COYER? Technically, the Deathstalkers count since the next one will be out Jan 3, 2019! lol I will read a few over the next week or so. Enjoy your reads!

  2. I hope the snow isn’t too bad tonight. Oh my gosh, chili and cornbread sound delish.
Your stash sounds nice and organized, I need to do that as well. There aren’t enough hours in the day for it all.
Your books look good, enjoy them. I’ve read Sarah Morgan before and liked the book in that series.
I love your blog header, so cute! Hope you get the Facebook collage sorted out, I don’t know much about it myself.
    Enjoy your week!

    • Thanks! It would have to snow A LOT more to be a problem for a former Minnesota resident. This is nothing. But they have no idea how to handle it here. I’m going to go out shortly and shovel a bit. I don’t want frozen rain on top of the snow. Ugh. It’s so pretty and not really cold. Plus I have MN weather coats and boots. Then on to chili.

I have a good impression of Sarah Morgan but have not yet read her. Believe it or not, I look at reviews of each of the freebies before I get them to make sure I would actually like them. I reject many others. It’s worse, so many books, I think because I read so many genres.

  3. I wish I could help with your Facebook issue but I’m challenged on that site myself. LOL Barely use it. It warmed and rained buckets here but now the north wind is blowing and getting cold. I don’t rake leaves as most of my trees stay green year round. I just sweep them into the yard and let the lawn dude mulch them up. I did get my fire pit ready though. Looking forward to listening to some audibles while getting toasty around a fire.

    • Thanks! A fire and audiobooks sounds good. I’m soaking wet after trying to shovel the driveway. The shovel is broken. The handle is cracking away from the scoop. The snow is so heavy. How do I not have a MN shovel? I have all the other great gear.

Now my sheets are done in the dryer. It’s off to a shower and then time to make chili.

      Have a great reading week!

  4. I DNFd Moonlight over Manhattan, but I hope you have a better experience with it! I thought the guy was condescending and pushy, and everyone wanted her to go for it because he was a doctor. Doctors can be axe murderers, too. The True Queen was a recent addition to my TBR! I have high hopes for it.

We don’t get snow here in Texas, so when it does happen to snow an inch or two, it’s like the apocalypse. Schools and businesses close down, cars are stuck on the road, people buy ALL the water from every store in town. It’s madness.

    • We don’t usually get snow in NC, usually only an inch or two. They have no equipment or way to handle it here either.

I hope I like the Sarah Morgan book. I always read all the blurbs for the freebies and some reviews. Yet still sometimes I pick a dud.

I really loved Sorcerer to the Crown so I am also looking forward to True Queen.

  5. Posting to FB is a pain (from the blog). The only way I have found to have control over it is to use a social media manager (I used CoSchedule, but you could use Buffer, etc) or to build the post on FB. PAIN IN THE REAR!

Enjoy the snow-I’m jealous of all my NC friends (I lived in Raleigh) posting all their snow pics!

    • FB is easy when it comes from the blog because it’s all formatted in WordPress. It’s the other stuff I can’t make look good. I’ll check into CoSchedule. Thanks.

The snow is pretty here but very short-lived. Have a great week.

  6. You all got some snow this weekend. We didn’t get any but most of our snow is in January. I am hoping it will snow one more time around Christmas. It’s been years since we had a white christmas.

I hope you enjoy all your books! Have a great week Anne! Happy Reading!

    • Yes, it’s unusual to have snow here in December. It’s normally 1-2 days in February. Whenever, it always melts in a day or so. We don’t have any way to handle it. No snowplows or anything.

I am grateful to get so many wonderful books. Thank you!

    • Well today it’s chicken over biscuits. There’s lots of veggies with the chicken, it’s the filling I used to use with chicken pot pie but now I make gluten-free biscuits to put it on top of them, sort of like chicken & dumplings. Still snowing. We decided to stay in since it will all melt tomorrow. I don’t feel like shoveling for a few hours since it will melt. Thanks for commenting. I hope you enjoy your reads!

  7. There is nothing wrong with the occasional carb coma 🙂 I love a good lasagna! Congrats on being almost totally caught up with your arc pile. I don’t know that I will ever be able to say that. Enjoy all of your new books and have a great week!

    • Thanks Carole. I hope you have a great week and have some time to read!

I’m thinking about perusing the audible sale. It’s a good deal for some but I figure my cost per credit is about $9.60 so it has to be less than that. Plus Tantor had stuff at $4.99 for Cyber Monday but lots of things still at $6.99 now. So I have to compare carefully. Plus sometimes the buy a Kindle book and add Whispersync is quite different pricing than buying the audible version. And I have to make certain of what I already own as well. I have a few things thru Tantor or that I ordered thru Brilliance. Those are quite small lists tho. The best deal is to get it at the library if I won’t listen to it multiple times.(and they have it)

    • Yes you and some others have been fans of Cara Bristol so I picked it up. Most of the freebies are ones with known authors or receiving some good ratings/reviews. Plus if it’s something I want to try since it’s free, why not? I hope your reading is enjoyable these days!

  8. That’s a great use of Ravelry’s “Stored” field. I sorted my yarn a few months ago, into bins by weight like you did, but I should update the Stored field with the bin names. Right now, it just says “basement,” which isn’t much help LOL! (BTW, I’m Lady-Lark on Ravelry if you want to friend me.)

I hope you got just enough snow to enjoy, and not enough to annoy. We got about 5 inches at our house… or so my husband says. I’m not home; I’m visiting family out west, and completely missed the storm.

I don’t think I’ll do the Read-Along, but have fun! And have a lovely week!

    • I got sidetracked by weather. It was supposed to snow Sunday, freezing rain overnight and just rain today. So when it changed from rain to snow yesterday I shoveled off the snow, so the rain could wash away. But instead of warming today, something changed and it snowed again! So we’re just staying home today, and I’m not bothering to shovel since it will be sunny and 40s tomorrow. It’s not worth the effort when it will melt.

I am Northwoman on Ravelry. The problem comes in when there is more than one tote of a particular category which I have , or unclear categories. Just defining what tote it is in is best. I just added you in Ravelry.

  9. Oh, I loved Brooklynaire and Moonlight Over Manhattan! Awesome that you got them as freebies! Hope you love them as much as I did.

I just re-read the entire Mercy Thompson & Alpha & Omega series last year and it was even more fabulous the second time around. Great choice for a read-along re-read.

    • Thanks! I love both of Patricia Briggs’ series. It’s always tough to choose between something you know and love (Kate Daniels) and something new you want to try. (The Hollows, Alex Verus). But I have to do new to me ones at least every other time.

    • Thank you Nicci! I appreciate you being willing to try the Read-along. I know there are so many things to read. So many challenges. It’s easier to choose something well-loved because people can play along even if they aren’t reading along. But I like to try new things. Some of the other options I REALLY wanted to choose but they were hard to get (Not at any of my libraries) or not available on audio or expensive to buy. I wanted to choose something I would enjoy but was likely accessible.

    • Thanks Irena. I was tired but the doctor appointments were primarily for my daughter.

I HAVE been enjoying my books this month. I’ve been reading stuff I want rather than new releases. But I want to read it ALL.

  10. LOL You and I are transplanted from places of snow to this weird state that panics when there’s even 3 flakes in the air. But that’s ok. They aren’t used to it like we are. I hope you faired well. We ended up with nearly a foot and I wish it would all go away now. lol

I wish I could help you with Facebook. It’s a mystery to me. When I put my post link in the status it USED to put the cover in automatically and for some reason now it’s not. I hate Facebook. Seriously.

    • ikr? The snow doesn’t faze me. And it’s nice to just stay home and read and relax.

I think there is no help for Facebook. I’m going to decide it’s ok if the graphics aren’t how I want them because I am not going to bother with using some graphics program to create the whole post. I do wish I could figure out how to get rid of the page I deleted though.

  11. I always use public transportation to go to work so I’m hoping it is not going to snow when I have to be present.
I love the cover of The True Queen! I hope you’ll enjoy all the books you got!

    Have a wonderful week!
