This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre.

The genre here, by my definition,  is series where the main character(s) are Shapeshifters.  These are some of my favorites  Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities.  I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.

My favorite Shapeshifters series are (in no particular order):

Mercy Thompson series                   Cambio Springs series                   Riley Jensen Guardian series
by Patricia Briggs                                   by Elizabeth Hunter                        by Keri Arthur

Kitty Norville series                             The Others series                              Psy-Changeling series
by Carrie Vaughn                                   by Anne Bishop                                 by Nalini Singh

What are your favorite series?

My favorite shapeshifter series ? Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound, Laurell Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, and Kelley Armstrong’s Cainesville, Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson and her spin off Alpha and Omega series. I loved Kitty Norville by Carrie Vaughn and Riley Jenson by Keri Arthur were AMAZING too. Anything Keri writes is awesome. Of course i have a dozen others and in some ways they’re all my favorites.

    • Isn’t that the truth? They are all my favorites and I could only include 6 for this meme. I actually prefer Alpha & Omega to Mercy but I love both. I haven’t read Jennifer Ashley but want to; I have read her Stormwalker series and I love it. Cainesville is on my TBR too. I almost started it but ended up with Rockton series instead. Anita Blake I have read but I wouldn’t have included it as Anita is not a shifter exactly. They are all great books to read.

    • Is that the Kresley Cole one? That would be why I didn’t include it as I haven’t read it. But this is a discussion not a hard and fast my way is the only way. Well I have read one and started the next one but couldn’t get myself into it. I do personally have more difficulty with PNR than UF, for various reasons.

      • Yes, by Kresley Cole. Definitely more PNR like Psy-Changling and the first book isn’t that strong but once it got rolling I was really into it.

I forgot the Faith Hunter Soulwood series. That has shifters in it and I really like it.

    • OK that’s my all-time favorite series as well but Kate is not a shapeshifter and she is definitely the main character. So by my definition, not for this view of books. I realized yesterday though The Others is a stretch also then as Meg is not a shapeshifter but they are with her from the beginning. Kate Daniels is alone at the beginning.

This is just a way for me to view and enjoy different groups of series.

  2. I’m doing some features this month about series and shifter stories are among the ones I want to start or get caught up on. The Others and Mercy Thompson are high on my list! Some of the others on your list are also on my radar.

My introduction to shapeshifter books was Andrea Cremer’s Nightshade and Rachel Vicent’s Stray in my teenage years. Those are not books I would recommend today but at the time I devoured both series.

      • Soraya o

I love The Others for the uniqueness and the Mercy Thompson world particularly the Alpha & Omega books. I only read book three in the Cambio Springs series and really like and intended to finish the series soon but haven’t manage to read the others yet although I have some of the Psy-Changellings books and really like Nalini Singh writing.

  4. Oh that’s some great series there!
I love The others one, like I adoooore it! Mercy THompson too and I thought of Secret McQueen by Sierra Dean as I love it. It’s a fun series. I wanted to ass october daye but I don’t know if it works as it’s fae who can change like the cat king.

    • Yes some of these would not fit my limited definition even if they are amazing series. I haven’t yet read Toby Daye and I think only one book of Secret McQueen. I don’t think either of them are shapeshifters even if they are closely connected with them. But it’s great to talk about more good series.

My favorite series with shapeshifters is Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. I love it for the great characters, character interactions, and world-building.

  6. I read my first The Others book last week and loved those shifters, but figured I couldn’t say it was a favorite series just yet. LOL Definitely the combined Mercy Thompson/Alpha&Omega series. Yep to the PsyChanglings.

These are some others I also love: Eileen Wilks’ World of the Lupi, Cecy Robson’s Weird Girls, Paige Tyler’s X-Ops and her SWAT series, Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels, Dani Harper’s Grim, and I’m sure there are more particularly if I were to count series where the ‘sometimes main character’ is a shifter. 🙂

In some light humorous series: I like several Eve Langlais’ Kodiak Point and Bitten Point, but also Mell Eight’s Supernatural Consultant series.

    • Thanks for all the different series recommendations. I’ve also wanted to read Paige Tyler.

I’m not really very familiar with Eileen Wilk or Dani Harper and I haven’t read Eve Langlais.

      More series to try!

My top three from this list was easy. Mercy, The Others and Psy-Changeling. I’m also a big fan of Shifters Unbound by Jennifer Ashley and Kodiak Point/Bitten Point/Dragon Point (they each spin off into the next) by Eve Langlais, Heartstrikers by Rachel Aaron, Pride/Honey Badger Chronicles by Shelley Laurenston, Dragon Kin by G.A. Akien, Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong. This is my favorite genre, as you can tell.

    • Awesome. I’m surprised more people haven’t mentioned Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong. I sort of forgot about that as I’ve only read the first one. I mean to read the rest at some time. I’m definitely going to make time for Heartstrikers by Rachel Aaron also. Great recommendations.

      • Melanie

Otherwold has been complete for several years now. Outta sight, outta mind. I wonder if anyone is mentioning Anita Blake. 5 years ago, I would’ve but I quit listening because the editing (not so much grammatically, but in continuity, as is the name of a character had a different name for an entire book. Not a major character, but still).

  8. I love the Mercy Thompson series as well as the Alpha & Omega series by Patricia Briggs. The Others is another great series. I am guessing that Kate Daniels doesn’t count for this since she isn’t a shapeshifter? That would also be a favorite. I love shapeshifter books but I haven’t read most of the series that you shared. I need to get busy!

    • Yes! I bugged my daughter to read Written in Red for over a year because I was sure she would like it. I finally bargained her to read it. She then read it 28 times. It’s a favorite. I also highly recommend the indie Cambio Springs series by Elizabeth Hunter. There are just 3 books and a couple novellas but the books are all 5 star amazing.

  9. This isn’t a genre I’ve read much in, but there are a few… and more, if you open up high fantasy. I really like Rachel Aaron’s Heartstriker series, though I’ve only read one book so far. I also loved Rachel Hartman’s YA fantasy Seraphina; the dragons in that can shapeshift to appear human, but they are secondary characters. And there’s a werewolf character in Nora Roberts’s Guardians trilogy. But you know, in trying to answer this, I’m realizing just how little shifter fiction I’ve read!

    • OK I love Kate Daniels and Merit but they aren’t shapeshifters. This one is for series where the main character is a shapeshifter. The Others is a stretch for Meg, but she is living with them from the beginning. Kate and Merit are alone. Kate does end up with a shapeshifter but Merit is a vampire with a vampire.

        • Yes of course by the end Curran is a main character but it takes a few books. And of course, Conlan is a main character by the end. I just don’t consider it a shifter series because Kate isn’t. I would call it more a paranormal series because it has all types I guess. Hidden Legacy or Innkeeper would also be more paranormal even though they have shifters in them also.

I enjoy the shifters in Chicagoland but they are more common in the later books than the beginning. Early on, it’s mostly just Jeff who works with her Dad. I wouldn’t call it a shifter series, either. I would call CV a vampire series.

  10. I haven’t read most of these series, but have heard of all of them. Written in Red I even own a copy of, but haven’t read it yet. Oh and I read the first few Kitty books and own a few more that I haven’t read yet. Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld series is one of my favorite shifter series and Carol Van Natta’s Ice Age Shifters series.

    • Yes, the Otherworld is a great series, a bit older. I’ve read some of it and forgot about it for this. *gasp* I haven’t read the Carol Van Natta. Thanks for sharing. I hope you find something you enjoy or that you read Written in Red – it’s amazing.
