Haley Powell wakes up covered in blood, with no memory of the night before. When she sees a man lying in the backyard, stabbed to death, she has only one terrified thought: What have I done?

Agreeing to take the case as a favor to her PI friend Lincoln Sharp, Morgan must scale a mountain of damning circumstantial and forensic evidence to prove her client innocent. Haley couldn’t appear more guilty: her bloodstained fingerprints are on the murder weapon, and she has no alibi. But Morgan can’t shake the feeling that this shocked young woman has been framed.

Someone out there is hell-bent on sabotaging her defense, targeting Morgan, her partner, and especially Haley. Someone who will stop at nothing—and whose next move will be deadly.

A short review to update challenges

I quickly continued onward with the Morgan Dane series . It is on Kindle Unlimited, with the audio version also.  Now we get more of Sharp’s history. It is a sad and dangerous journey for all of them to clear their new client from his past.

I was infuriated by the quick-to-judge law enforcement and the damage it did to the wrongly accused.  With the investigation stirring things up, more people began to die. Their work in finding new details, Sharp, Morgan and Lance faced even more danger.  I am concerned about a smallish town having so many murders!  It can’t be too small, I think.

I loved this and continue to enjoy the narration.  Now I’m stuck waiting for two more books this year,  Secrets Never Die  (March) and Save Your Breath (September).  In the meantime, I can go back for the earlier Scarlett Falls series, set in this world.

About Melinda Leigh

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh is a fully recovered banker. A life-long lover of books, she started writing as a way to preserve her sanity while raising her kids. Over the next few years, she learned a few things about writing a book. The process was much more fun than analyzing financial statements, and she decided to turn her hobby into a career. Melinda’s debut novel, SHE CAN RUN, was nominated for Best First Novel by the International Thriller Writers. She is a RITA® Award Finalist and has earned three Daphne du Maurier Award nominations, two Silver Falchion Awards, and a Golden Leaf.

Melinda holds a 2nd degree belt in Kenpo Karate. She’s dabbled in Arnis stick fighting, studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and taught women’s self-defense. She lives in a messy house in the suburbs with her husband, two kids, a couple of shelter dogs and two rescue cats who clearly run the show. With such a pleasant life, she has no explanation for the sometimes dark and disturbing nature of her imagination.

  1. This one is also in my list for audible. I will have to work on getting the beginning of the series tho. I do not have kindle unlimited but do have audible. Thanks for the review. I can’t wait to start this series!

    • I’ve listened to the first 4 and think they are REALLY great. I enjoyed them so much. Mystery. Lawyer and ex-cop private detectives. It was right up my alley and I think you read this type of thing too. Highly recommend it.

  2. This sounds like a really interesting series so I’m glad to hear how much you’re enjoying it. I’ve just started getting into audiobooks more, so I’ll have to keep this series in mind. I know I would have been raging about the law enforcement while reading too.
