Being shunned by Society gives Charlotte Holmes the time and freedom to put her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. As “Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective,” aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, she’s had great success helping with all manner of inquiries, but she’s not prepared for the new client who arrives at her Upper Baker Street office.

Lady Ingram, wife of Charlotte’s dear friend and benefactor, wants Sherlock Holmes to find her first love, who failed to show up at their annual rendezvous. Matters of loyalty and discretion aside, the case becomes even more personal for Charlotte as the missing man is none other than Myron Finch, her illegitimate half brother.

In the meanwhile, Charlotte wrestles with a surprising proposal of marriage, a mysterious stranger woos her sister Livia, and an unidentified body that surfaces where least expected. Charlotte’s investigative prowess is challenged as never before: Can she find her brother in time—or will he, too, end up as a nameless corpse somewhere in the belly of London?

A short review to update challenges

I started the Lady Sherlock series after seeing how much Kimberly at Caffeinated enjoyed it.  So right before I started A Conspiracy in Belgravia, I tweeted her to ask if Lady Ingram could please have a fatal accident.  Little did I know she would play a big part here.  I hadn’t read the blurb, obviously.

Charlotte continued her cases with the delightful Mrs. Watson and her niece.   There were so many layers of happenings – this was amazing.  I was very worried for Livia.   I was furious with Charlotte’s father and Lord Bancroft. I was disappointed with Inspector Treadle; I hope he sees some personal growth and quickly.   Charlotte proved to be her incredible, intelligent and logical self. I would have been an emotional mess. The ending had a small shock and now I am desperate to read The Hollow of Fear, and I’ll definitely be looking forward to The Art of Theft planned for October.

Narration:

I have become enamored of Kate Reading as the narrator. There is a bit more thought stream than dialogue and she is Charlotte to me.  The other voices are less frequent and were comfortably realistic. The accents for the location felt real to me but since I’m not an expert on regional accents they may not be accurate. I was able to listen at 1.5x speed. The performance added to my enjoyment of the story.

About Sherry Thomas

Sherry Thomas writes both historical romance and young adult fantasy.

On the romance side, she is one of the most acclaimed authors working in the genre today, her books regularly receiving starred reviews and best-of-the-year honors from trade publications. She is also a two-time winner of Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA® Award.

On the young adult fantasy side, there isn’t much to report yet, her debut book, THE BURNING SKY, book 1 of the Elemental Trilogy, has received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and been named to the Autumn ’13 Kids’ Indie Next List.

Sherry writes in her second language. She learned English by reading romance and science fiction–every word Isaac Asimov ever wrote, in fact. She is proud to say that her son is her biggest fanboy–for the YA fantasy, not the romances. At least, not yet..

    • I think you will love them. They have a science sort of logic like Sherlock Holmes. The characters are great. They are exciting and with some plot layers. You probably like historical better than me. I hope you enjoy them.

    • OH I don’t like to do that – I mean read out of order. It will be interesting to see how you like the others. This one was really amazing and I’m dying for Hollow of Fear but also have commitments. If I didn’t I’d just buy it and listen to it in one day likely. But with commitments I’ll wait for it at the library while I work them. This one was amazing.
