With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper class society. But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London.

When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name. She’ll have help from friends new and old—a kind-hearted widow, a police inspector, and a man who has long loved her. But in the end, it will be up to Charlotte, under the assumed name Sherlock Holmes, to challenge society’s expectations and match wits against an unseen mastermind.

A short review to update challenges

I saw this Lady Sherlock series on Kimberly at Caffeinated’s blog and I had to have it.  I had to wait a bit to get it at the library.  It took a little to settle in to this story for probably two reasons. First, I don’t read as much historical fiction. Also, because like the original Sherlock Holmes books there are details for the solving of mysteries. But I love that!  It’s the process of using the brain to organize data to make actual useful information which is fabulous!

Charlotte is delightfully logical and sees no reason for her not to use her own skills even if she isn’t a man. (I’d love to see her conversing with Spock or any other Vulcan) LOL. Luckily, she is smart enough to work into a way to make things happen. She does get some initially unknown assistance and I wonder where that will go. I want actual romance for her but it seems very unlikely.   I’ll definitely be continuing on with A Conspiracy in Belgravia, which I just received from the library.

Narration:

I was able to listen at 1.5x speed.  The narration worked well for me with both male and female voices feeling authentic. The accents for the location felt real to me but since I’m not an expert on regional accents they may not be accurate.  The performance added to my enjoyment of the story.

About Sherry Thomas

Sherry Thomas writes both historical romance and young adult fantasy.

On the romance side, she is one of the most acclaimed authors working in the genre today, her books regularly receiving starred reviews and best-of-the-year honors from trade publications. She is also a two-time winner of Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA® Award.

On the young adult fantasy side, there isn’t much to report yet, her debut book, THE BURNING SKY, book 1 of the Elemental Trilogy, has received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and been named to the Autumn ’13 Kids’ Indie Next List.

Sherry writes in her second language. She learned English by reading romance and science fiction–every word Isaac Asimov ever wrote, in fact. She is proud to say that her son is her biggest fanboy–for the YA fantasy, not the romances. At least, not yet..

  1. I want to read these series. I have watched all the old Sherlock shows from BBC and really enjoyed them. I think I would like this different twist to Sherlock. I think I will pick up this audio. Great review!
