In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

A short review to update challenges

I’ve had this urge to read Stephen King because I’m sure he is an able writer but I am not into horror.  Mr. Mercedes is a great compromise as it is a dark mystery, crime book, the kind of story I read quite often.

I enjoyed this world and its characters because they are so flawed which makes them more realistic. I understand why they did some things but damn, some things were not smart, not safe.  We get two points of view, the retired detective Bill Hodges, and the criminal.  I really like having those different perspectives.

The pace and action are riveting. I like how Jerome and Janie and Holly really all come through even when it is hard for them and it’s not really their area of expertise. Bill and his helpers all work hard, using the skills they have to solve the crimes.  It’s terrifying to see if they will succeed before anyone else gets hurt. And who will survive?  I’ll definitely be reading on in The Bill Hodges trilogy.

Narration:

I was glad to be able to listen at 1.5x speed.  The male voices were better than the female voices but there were not many female voices.  The age of the voices seemed authentic though.

  1. It’s been a very long time since I read anything by King. I went through a phase many years ago when I was reading everything he wrote but nowadays I’m a lot less included to pick up horror. Glad this one worked for you!

  2. I absolutely do NOT want to read anything by SK that has any type of sex or heat in it. I read him because he doesn’t have it in there. =) I was just looking at you flames there. I am glad you liked this one as I have it on my list to get. I want the audio also mostly because his books are usually so darn long it would be easier for me to listen to them. I have been doing that a lot with books. Getting the audios of them.

    • I love audio because I can do it while I am doing so many other things when I could not read. Driving, sewing, knitting, cooking and so forth.

There is a little sex but it is quite limited, and not detailed. It is not a focus of the story.

      I hope you enjoy it.
