When Wynter Roth finally escapes from New Earth, a self-contained doomsday cult on the American prairie, she emerges into a world poised on the brink of madness as a mysterious outbreak of rapid early onset dementia spreads across the nation.

As Wynter struggles to start over in a world she’s been taught to regard as evil, she finds herself face-to-face with the apocalypse she’s feared all her life—until the night her sister shows up at her doorstep with a set of medical samples. That night, Wynter learns there’s something far more sinister at play: that the prophet they once idolized has been toying with the fate of mankind, and that these samples are key to understanding the disease.

Now, as the power grid fails and the nation descends into chaos, Wynter must find a way to get the samples to a lab in Colorado. Uncertain who to trust, she takes up with former military man Chase Miller, who has his own reasons for wanting to get close to the samples in her possession, and to Wynter, herself.

Filled with action, conspiracy, romance, and questions of whom—and what—to believe, The Line Between is a high-octane story of survival and love in a world on the brink of madness, from “the queen of psychological twists” (New York Times bestselling author Steena Holmes).

Wow!  I really enjoyed The Line Between.   It’s a dystopia with suspense. I love the characters in all their realistic, flawed glory. Wynter and her sister, Magnus, Chase, Noah, Julie, Ken, Lauren, Ashley and more are all trying their best.  There are big time triggers here for me with the cult and its leader who decides to move on to new wives as he gets bored. I am never happy with those who use religion to enforce their ideas on others.

There is a bit of past and present in most of the story. It begins with the day Wynter is cast out of the cult going forward, while contrasting with the past scenes, starting when her mother brought her to the cult when she was 7 years old.  Once it catches up to present day,  the race is on to save the world, save the child. Wynter, with the help and hindrance of many, struggles to get samples to a lab. She risks her life many times as she fights to get there.

I was terrified for Wynter at the end, but she handled it brilliantly. Chase was a total swoon, a man with integrity and kindness, smart and funny. I highly recommend The Line Between. Apparently there will be a sequel, A Single Light, in September 2019.

Narration:

Cassandra Campbell was a pleasure to hear. She brought the range of emotions to me enhancing the story.  She handled the male and female voices comfortably for me at 1.5x speed. As I would expect, she became Wynter for me. But I also loved her delivery of Chase’s dialogue with its deadpan wit.  I’ve listened to her before, and would again.

    • Thanks. I really loved it. I also debate. Every. Single. Book. as there are so many I want to read. I really liked it and am excited to see there will be a sequel. Although it could have ended here, the ending for this one was satisfying.

    • Well not that exactly but she has been raised to expect the end of the world since she was 7. Then she’s tossed out and there is an epidemic which kind of is the end of the world. In some cases, like meeting Chase, she is extremely lucky because if he had been a bad guy or even an unskilled guy she probably would have died.

  1. I always love it when a narrator brings a array of emotional depth to a story, makes it so much more of a satisfying experience. Glad you enjoyed this one. Lovely review.
