Gwen Proctor escaped her serial-killer husband and saved her family. What she can’t seem to outrun is his notoriety. Or the sick internet vigilantes still seeking to avenge his crimes. For Gwen, hiding isn’t an option. Not when her only mission is to create a normal life for her kids.

But now, a threatened woman has reached out. Marlene Crockett, from the remote town of Wolfhunter, is panicked for herself and her daughter. When Gwen arrives in the small, isolated rural community, Marlene is already dead—her own daughter blamed for the murder. Except that’s not the person Marlene feared at all. And Gwen isn’t leaving until she finds out who that was.

But it may already be too late. A trap has been set. And it’s poised to snap shut on everyone Gwen loves. Her stalkers are closing in. And in a town as dark as Wolfhunter, it’s so easy for them to hide…

This Stillhouse Lake series is a terrifying blur of survival.  You need to read these in order.  I wanted to read this as soon as I got it. I’m bummed it took me until last week.

At the end of Killman Creek,  Gwen was in rough shape.   I have to say she has amazing strength and intelligence.  She works so hard to protect her family. Doing all the running, self defense training, shooting and other skills takes consistent dedication and has to be exhausting. I admire her tenacity.  She protects her children mentally as well as physically, shielding them from the worst hate mongers and making sure they get counseling.

A perfect storm of a victim’s family going after the Proctors harder, another woman in trouble and a kidnapped child throw them all into dire circumstances again. Sam is part of their family but he has some secrets from the past.  I can understand not sharing them when they would only hurt Gwen and are in the past. However, holding back once they become a current problem is not cool.

Wolfhunter River is a rough journey with a light at the end of the tunnel. I wasn’t sure where the series would go after the last book but I know where I hope they go now. Gwen may be taking on a new career which will bring plenty of strong women and exciting adventures in the future. Next year, Bitter Falls is expected in March.

  1. This sounds like such a good series and so many people tend to love it. I’m pretty sure I own at least the first two so I need to make time for them. It’s always a good sign when the third book in the series is still going strong.

  2. I’m hoping to get to this series at some point. I’m glad to see her stand strong through all this diversity she is getting even from the victims’ families toward her own.

    • I got the first one Stillhouse Lake as a Prime First Read or whatever they were called then and loved it. I’ve just kept going. I enjoy everything I have read by Rachel Caine. I hope you do get a chance to enjoy it.

    • Me too! I’m glad to hear the audio is good. I’ve been reading this one and like you I tend to stick with a format in a series. Usually. I’m doing half and half in the DD Ayres K9 series next month, just because that’s what I could get.
