In a bid to revitalize his career, bestselling author Magnus Gray has come to Sagebrush Flats to write about the local zoo's latest rescue―an orphaned baby polar bear. But Magnus dreads the drama of small towns and is bullishly determined to keep to himself.

June Winters is a people person, and delights in welcoming Magnus to Sagebrush Flats, though it seems unlikely she can get the handsome stranger to crack a smile. Then a mishap with an open gate forces Magnus and June to deal with a stampeding flock of fainting goats, an adorable but clingy polar bear cub, a cranky pregnant camel, and two star-crossed honey badgers. Never mind small town drama―the lively animals may just convince these two that opposites really do attract...

I have a thing for zoos.  I was thrilled to find the first book, Wild on My Mind at the library.  I am continuing on with the Where the Wild Hearts Are series.

Well I didn’t feel the first book was very realistic and neither is the next one.  The characters emotions and issues and feelings are quite real but the overall set up in the small town is a bit too much, a town this small probably wouldn’t have a zoo.   Magnus has a difficult history and coming here to volunteer at the zoo seems probable. Unlikely, he would be from the same small place as June’s grandmother but possible I guess.

Certainly, Magnus could get involved with a sweet woman like June.  June is a whirlwind but it hides her own issues and feelings.   Her courage and honesty were so inspiring.  She really cares for others and tries to help them.  I loved it when Magnus helped her.

The animals in the zoo are also big characters in the story and it is a big win for me.   Sweet Wild of Mine is a fun, sexy book but also tackles some issues of the aging, and learning to take care and have confidence in yourself.

  1. I like the idea of having a zoo be part of the story like that, but it does seem a bit unrealistic that a small town would have a zoo. I might check this one out as the zoo aspect has me curious. I haven’t read as many books with zoo. And the characters in this one sound likable. That’s great that the animals are big characters too! Great review!

    • Yes I look at how realistic something is but really it is fiction so sometimes I am like, what do I expect? I liked the first book even more than this one. I love how the animals play roles in the story. The situations may be improbable but the human emotions and issues involved are realistic.

  2. I’ve actually seen a smaller town with zoo out in the California foothills run on a mix of grants and private funds so I bought that part, but I couldn’t see June’s kindness in such a good light, but I agree that she meant well.

    • Well yes I have also seen smaller zoos and they don’t tend to have more exotic animals. Mostly farm animals, and not ones like bears or polar bears which take more work on the exhibits. So you are right.

I think this book will be harder than the first because of the two main characters. Magnus was a complete ass, for good reason. June was a fixer. Neither was completely straightforward with themselves or others and that is harder to like in a character.
