Savannah has fallen to the vampires, and it’s up to Grier to take out their leader, Gaspard Lacroix, and restore peace. Lacroix might be more powerful and immune to her magic, but she’s got a plan. Too bad it’s got holes big enough for a new threat to waltz through while the city is on her knees.

Now Grier must risk her very soul if she hopes to slay her enemies and prevent her world from going up in flames. But salvation comes at a steep price, and she’s not the only one who will pay. The cost just might break her, and the man who owns her heart.

I can’t believe I’ve reached the end of the Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy series. I’ve loved listening to this series on audio.  They are all on Kindle Unlimited as well So I am trying to do a review without too many spoilers, and not just repeat the blurb.  You really need to read these in order as the characters have personal growth and the overall story arc continues.

There wasn’t much time or option for training or learning more with the city being wrecked by Lacroix. Grier and Linus work to find solutions.  I love the way Linus and Grier work together. Linus is amazing in his support of Grier.

They have a few options. They request help from the Atlanta shifters run by Lethe’s mother.  Lethe was just annoying me this time; I didn’t think she did much to help Grier.  Another avenue was to learn more about Grier’s abilities through the Marchands.  We do get more information on Grier’s parents through some old letters they find between Maud and her mother.  We also find out how Wooly was created.

As the final book,  How to Wake an Undead City, we had to see everyone.  I wasn’t all that thrilled with Boaz and his storyline. I haven’t been a fan and it still isn’t happening. Amelie has made progress on being more sensible. I did love the small parts of Neely and Marit.

There is exciting action with life/death suspense.  Grier has to dig deep to face her worst fears to get the information needed to save Savannah.  Linus and Grier have to figure out how they will make things work long-term in Atlanta or Savannah as Linus is the Potentate of Atlanta and Wooly is in Savannah.  I like the overall closure we get but I’d love to have more Grier and Linus.

Narration:

Rebecca Mitchell is Grier for me and also Linus. I enjoyed her handling of both male and female voices.  I noticed more the distinct voices of the other characters this time, such as Oscar, Odette, Neely, Lethe and Hood.  I listened at my newer 1.5x speed.

About Hailey Edwards

Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy. She lives in Alabama with her husband, their daughter, and a herd of dachshunds.

No lie, I’m a little bit in mourning over the end of Linus and Grier’s story. I am excited to see where the spin-ff series go, though.

    • Yes it’s tough. While I say I would like more Linus and Grier, too much time on romance or ordinary stuff might be boring. But I wish they could have caught a little more of a break between crises.

  2. it’s hard to review books in the series 😀 I hate giving away spoilers as well. Glad you enjoyed this series so much

    • I’ve seen on facebook I think 2 months for $0.99 recently but I already did a deal which gave me a longer time of it. I may also read it now that I’ve listened because there are details I want to savor.
