This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre.
The genre here, by my definition, is series in a dystopian world. This definition allows for a variety of genres with romance, science fiction types and fantasy types. BUT I am choosing series where there has been an event to alter the world. Otherwise, every fantasy or urban fantasy or really most speculative fiction would be in this category. There are many and these are the ones which came to mind.
Now two of these series only have one book so far, but I am including them because of how much I loved them.
Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My favorite dystopian series are (in no particular order):
Bannerless The Wolves of Winter Scythe
by Carrie Vaughn by Tryell Johnson by Neal Shusterman
Year One The Line Between Ashwin
by Nora Roberts by Tosca Lee by Kit Rocha

This is one of my favorite genres. I think my first was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins but my most favorite is <i:Red Rising by Pierce Brown.
OK I own both of those but haven’t read all of them. I think of them as fantasy rather than this genre but they are both. Genre is tricky.
Chronicles Of The One – like the characters and the world Nora created
I enjoy her books in most genres.
After reading your list and the sub-genre, I realized I haven’t read much dystopian, but I have read a few- mostly YA. 🙂
I loved Year One by Nora Roberts and still need to read book two. I haven’t read Kit Rocha yet, but I will eventually. 🙂 I’ll have to check out the other ones you mentioned.
My list is Rebecca Zanetti’s Scoripius Rising, Jay Kristoff’s Lifel1k3, Rook by Sharon Cameron (YA), Ashfall by Mike Mullins (YA), Rie Warren’s Don’t Tell series (m/M), Moira Rogers’ Bloodhounds, Paula Altenburg’s Demon Outlaws, Dire Earth Cycle by Jason Hough, Refuge Inc series by Leslie Lee Sanders (m/m), David Estes’ The Moon Dwellers (YA), Dark Mission by Karina Cooper, Fallen Sky by LA Witt (m/m), Dan Wells’ Partial (YA), Amazon Western by Maria Harte, Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (YA), Pierce Brown’s Red Rising series.
It’s been a while since I read dystopian.
Wow that’s a list. I tend not to read too much YA. I really enjoy this genre. The six I chose are all very different representations of it.
Haven’t read many dystopian before.. but the line between looks like my kind of read.
I loved that SO much. There is a bit of a romance. There is also a bunch of science like stuff. Then there’s the action /thriller parts. I like it all.
I loved the Divergent series and Hunger Games when I read them. But Hunger Games came out on top. Not sure why. I just seemed to connect better with the characters.
Sometimes it is hard to say. I enjoyed Divergent but haven’t delved into Hunger Games even though I have it.
