But it’s the lies that keep you safe.

Single mother Lee has the daily routine down to a science: shower in six minutes. Cut food into perfect squares. Never leave her on-the-spectrum son Mason in someone else’s care. She’ll do anything—anything—to keep his carefully constructed world from falling apart. Do anything to keep him safe.

But when her best friend Grace convinces her she needs a small break from motherhood to recharge her batteries, Lee gives in to a weekend trip. Surely a long weekend away from home won’t hurt?
Noah, Mason’s handsome, bright, charismatic tutor—the first man in ages Lee’s even noticed—is more than happy to stay with him.

Forty-eight hours later, someone is dead.

But not all is as it seems. Noah may be more than who he claims to be. Grace has a secret—one that will destroy Lee. Lee has secrets of her own that she will do anything to keep hidden.
As the dominoes begin to fall and the past comes to light, perhaps it's no mystery someone is gone after all…

I am reading and listening to mysteries and thrillers like an alcoholic on a bender.  One  of my friends reviewed Because You’re Mine and how could I resist?  There is a diversity of characters in this world. Everyone has secrets and is not what they seem.  These characters go through such traumatic and difficult things.  The primary adult characters are Lee, Noah and Grace.

Lee has worked hard and been dealt a bad hand most of her life. She has done so well for Mason.  She has her secrets, which are not pretty.

I am so sad Noah has gotten caught up in the mess which isn’t really his fault. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and now will have a world of hurt he doesn’t deserve.  He’s really a good guy, not perfect, but he’s done his best.

Grace has a successful career and a son, Luca.  She has befriended and helped Lee. Grace works hard at it with patience, even when Lee is not realistic.  She has built such a nice relationship with Mason and has tried to help him with his independence and therapy.  She recommended Noah after he helped her own son with some short-term therapy.

My mind is blown.  I hurt for some of the things which happened. I’m mad at the people who caused so much trouble who didn’t suffer the consequences so much.  Although some of them died by their own bad choices.  I enjoyed this twisty mystery with alternating views of past and present and tired to work through the lies.

Narration:

I have enjoyed Samantha Desz previously.  Because You’re Mine feels more like the stream of thoughts from the primary characters more than dialogue, although there is some.  The voices felt comfortable and appropriate to the gender and age.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

  1. Glad your latest suspense was such a hit. The fact that there is a strong personal emotional element is refreshing when it comes to this genre. Thanks for introducing me to a possibility. 🙂
