Bill Black is a scary guy: a tall ex-con who rides to work on a Harley, and trails an air of violence wherever he goes. In Macon, Georgia, Bill has caught the eye of a wiry little drug dealer and his cunning girlfriend. They think Bill might be a useful ally. They don't know that Bill is a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent named Will Trent. Or that he is fighting his own demons, undercover and cut off from the support of Sara Linton - the woman he loves, who he dares not tell he is putting himself at such risk.

Sara herself has come to Macon because of a cop shooting: Her stepson Jared has been gunned down in his home. Sara holds Lena, Jared's wife, responsible: The female detective has been a magnet for trouble all her life, and it's not the first time someone Sara loved got caught in the crossfire. Furious, Sara gets involved in the same case that Will is working without even knowing it, and soon danger is swirling around both of them.

In a novel of fierce intensity, shifting allegiances, and shocking twists, two investigations collide around a conspiracy on both sides of the law. Karin Slaughter's latest is both an electrifying thriller and a piercing study of human nature: What happens when good people face the unseen evils in their lives?

Continuing with the Will Trent series , I am always excited and thrilled to listen to the next one.  They just seem to get better and better. You want to read this series in order because of the personal growth  and development of the characters and world.  Unseen brings us back to Grant County and Lena. Sara and I don’t like Lena. Will, however, is more objective. We see here what an excellent detective he is.

Wow. Will is undercover and in a horrible situation. The case puts him in trouble with Sara as it ties into her past and family. Sara and Lena are always in some kind of personal battle, as Sara blames Lena for her husband’s death. Will is in a precarious situation with so many people getting killed, and the attempted murder of cops.  He is in grave danger of his cover being blown. Even with his cover, things are dicey more than once; he’s running with a bad crowd.

In addition to the adults being killed, there are children in trouble here, too. Will has an eagle eye for this and is instrumental in trying to save them.  I love / hate this kind of thing.  I hate it happening but love how good Will and Sara are at their work.  I also love how they care about each other enough to work through struggles with their relationship.

Lena was not the problem here. But I still don’t like her, and hearing her thoughts didn’t really help.  She’s really too selfish. Maybe it is just how much I like Sara and her kindness, but Lena is always about herself. Jared comes across as SO young and I feel a bit sorry for him.

Narration:

Kathleen Early is THE narrator of the series which might seem odd with the main character Will Trent being male. But Will is introspective and not very talkative. All the key people in his life are female: Angie, Amanda, Faith, and now Sara.  The primary points of view here are Will, Sara and Lena.  I felt comfortable with all the voices and listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

  1. Sometimes there is a character that just gets stuck in your craw even when they’re not causing mischief. This sounds thrilling with him being undercover in such a situation. I’ve got a few older books of hers, but I still need to try her stuff for the first time.
