Protecting someone always comes at a cost. At the age of thirteen, Charlie Quinn's childhood came to an abrupt and devastating end. Two men, with a grudge against her lawyer father, broke into her home and after that shocking night, Charlie's world was never the same. Now a lawyer herself, Charlie has made it her mission to defend those with no one else to turn to. So when Flora Faulkner, a motherless teen, begs for help, Charlie is reminded of her own past, and is powerless to say no. But honor-student Flora is in far deeper trouble than Charlie could ever have anticipated. Soon she must ask herself: how far should she go to protect her client? And can she truly believe everything she is being told?

A short review to update challenges
I read my first book by this author this summer and it was insta-love! I just bought The Good Daughter at Audible and saw this prequel was available at the library and couldn’t resist. Last Breath was a great introduction to the world and the characters; it is about half a book size, longer than a novella.
I loved the mystery and following the evidence, even with a narrator having personal issues. I liked Chloe. She is a defense lawyer following in the footsteps of her father. I want her husband, Ben – what an amazing man! Chloe tries to help people, in this case, a teenage girl.
I don’t believe this is actually a series, but I can only hope it will be. I don’t think Karin Slaughter can write a bad book. I’m excited to read more!
Narration:
Kathleen Early seems to narrate most of the works by this author. I did get a bit of feeling that Sara Linton was telling this story. lol The narrator is excellent and gave a wonderful performance. The voices were all comfortable and with some differences for the characters. I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.

oooo i love karen slaughter. thanks for sharing the great review
I just found her this year and it was love at first sight! SO good
I love Karin Slaughter! I haven’t read this one yet though. Sounds like another great one. I’m glad you liked it so much. 😉
It’s great. Her prequels are the size of other authors regular books, and her regular books are the size of two books. But they could go on and on for me.
I need to read/listen to more of this author. Wonderful review Anne.
I’ve enjoyed every single thing of hers I have read. Seriously. She might be the Ilona Andrews of mystery for me.
She sure can write some great stories. I’ve been enjoying her books for some time.
I just read her the first time this year and WOW.
