The last time homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite was in Cedar Grove, it was to see her sister’s killer put behind bars. Now she’s returned for a respite and the chance to put her life back in order for herself, her attorney husband, Dan, and their new daughter. But tragic memories soon prove impossible to escape.

Dan is drawn into representing a local merchant whose business is jeopardized by the town’s revitalization. And Tracy is urged by the local PD to put her own skills to work on a new case: the brutal murder of a police officer’s wife and local reporter who was investigating a cold-case slaying of a young woman. As Tracy’s and Dan’s cases crisscross, Tracy’s trail becomes dangerous. It’s stirring up her own haunted past and a decades-old conspiracy in Cedar Grove that has erupted in murder. Getting to the truth is all that matters. But what’s Tracy willing to risk as a killer gets closer to her and threatens everyone she loves?

The Tracy Crosswhite series  is very much a favorite, which I borrowed the audiobooks through Kindle Unlimited and then purchased them.  Each book is a well crafted development of characters in this group of co-workers, family and friends. Even the witnesses and suspects are brought to life in a realistic way.

I love the puzzling mysteries, police procedures, and thrilling action, with issues of evidence and politics.  I would read this series in order due to the spoilers in the personal and professional lives of the characters, plus it is such a pleasure to read them.

Tracy is smart and excellent in her work.  She is struggling with a decision about raising her child, continuing her career and the time and expectations in her marriage.  This is a realistic issue all women with children and careers face.  For some it is a more difficult decision than others.

A Cold Trail is set back in Cedar Grove where Tracy and Dan grew up.  We know some of the characters from their childhood, others were new to the reader, but people they knew.  A murder just before Sarah’s disappearance and a current couple murders seem to be linked, maybe, but how? The local police have asked her to help due to both her experience and the local department may be too closely involved to be as objective as is needed.

Tracy does take the case.  She has to deal with feelings of not spending enough time with her daughter.  There is also the danger she or her family might face from the killer(s) she crosses in her work.   I love Tracy and can’t wait to see what is next for her!

Narration:

I love Emily Sutton-Smith as the narrator for this series.  I am thrilled I can get the audiobook version through Kindle Unlimited.  The male and female voices are distinct and I recognize characters pretty well now.  I was able to listen  at my usual 1.5x speed.

  1. I have been meaning to try his books and even got one to listen to from KU but let it go back when I wanted something else. I can see I need to start this series. Soon.
