Sunday Post – 8 March 2020 @kimbacaffeinate @readingreality @Tynga

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly  @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week, and showcase books and things we have received.

Stacking The Shelves is also a weekly meme hosted by  Tynga’s Reviews and Marlene from Reading Reality.  It’s all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.

Sunday I did the usual stuff but none too quickly. I’ve been taking a relaxed view for a bit now.  I am in a MOOD about reading. I want to read what I want to read and apparently that is the Gaslight mysteries.  I switched from audio to ebook when they changed narrators because I preferred the first narrator, so I can sound like her in my head when I read the ebook.  I have read 9 of them in the last 7 days.

Monday was the usual long day but the weather was great!  It was almost 70F / 20C.  Since we had 2 classes and 2 medical appts I couldn’t bear to leave Lulu at home.  I took her with me.  So we went to a dog park only a couple miles from her college. There wasn’t anyone there so we walked the trails and did see a few people / dogs. Then we went to Home Depot and got some plants and seeds. Next to Wendys for my salad and her cheeseburger. That was a mistake as she made a mess and I’m never getting her cheese again.  I ran in quick to get 2 items at BJs and then we went to pick up my daughter for the med appts.  There’s another park near her appts which has charging. So the first appt I charged and we walked new trails.  The second appt, Lulu and I were so tired we just rested while the car charged.  But I was able to do the day all electric with the charging.

I thought I was tired Monday night but I managed to read 2 Gaslight mysteries staying up to 3am.  That made Tuesday more of a challenge. It rained hard a few times in the afternoon. I continued reading Gaslight mysteries instead of what I was “supposed” to read. Last week I was a bit ahead; this week I am finishing my review book a day before the review is published… because Gaslight Mysteries.

Wednesday, I ran errands and luckily finished an audiobook for review. Thursday was more of the same. It was cool and cloudy but at least it didn’t rain as much as it was forecast. Friday was nicer. I went to Penzeys for their latest sale. Their sale items are great, inexpensive ways to try the different spices and blends.  Then I got a few staples at Aldis and we stopped at Walmart on the way home trying grocery pickup for the first time.  I like it better than running around the store and waiting in the checkout line. We ate more garden broccoli at dinner.  Spinach from last fall has also sprouted two rebel plants. If we do need to self-impose a quarantine, we could make it for months with what is in the freezer and the garden. Milk and eggs would be the problem.

Saturday, I tried to do all my computer work and laundry. I needed to catchup on COYER and Library Love linking.  I have been very lax on projects recently and am saving the house projects and tax prep for spring break.

I considered over and over about going to Emerald City Comic Con over the last year.  I have always wanted to go.  It seemed like one of the only chances to get the prizes for the Read-along signed and pick up some great swag. But it was the week before spring break and since my daughter is at the location that requires an hour drive each way, Uber is very expensive.  That would leave her without my support at home and I didn’t know yet about her PT scheduling. So I decided unhappily that I just couldn’t go.  Well now because of the coronovirus, first Patricia Briggs decided not to go.  I would have been devastated to have paid all that money in travel / hotel etc and have her not go.  Now they have postponed the whole ECCC to summer 2020 and I might be able to go!  What an odd turn of events. I don’t know if it will combine with an Alaska cruise or if we will do the cruise another year instead.

Sunday, after visiting some Sunday posts, I plan to plant the lettuce, spinach and snow peas I bought earlier in the week and maybe do a bit of yard cleanup.  The weather looks great this week, around 70F or 20C with a bit of rain some days!

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality.  These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):

I won The Silence in a Goodreads giveaway.   Thanks so much to Goodreads Giveaway, Macmillan / Tor, Berkley Romance, Penguin Audio,  and Tantor Audio.

(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)

I love this cover and decided I needed this Audible daily deal.

Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT  they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

If you like this and want to see me do the Sunday post, as often as I can manage, leave me a comment and let me know.

Anne

  1. Nine books in seven days… I am in awe. Thank goodness you hadn’t planned on going to ECCC. That could have been a big loss with all the deposits. Hopefully it works out next year. Hope you have a great week, Anne!

    • There you are. It went to spam and I had to approve it. Haha the 9 books in 7 days is only the Gaslight mysteries. I also read 4 other books, 3 audios and one ebook. But yes it’s a good thing they are on the short side because I am going through them like mad. Thank you.

  2. Oh, how it warms my heart that you’re binge reading Gaslight Mystery? Too bad about the change in narrators, though. I’ve only experienced that when the replacement was better. But I know what you mean about the voices already formed in your head. I created the voices for the In Death series before I discovered the audiobooks. No matter how good Susan Erickson is, it doesn’t work.

I hope you enjoy the Roxanne St. Claire freebie. I liked that whole Timeless trilogy in the Barefoot Bay universe.

    Have a fantastic week, Anne?

    • Thank you Jonetta! Well I have the David Chandler obsession with the Cork O’Connor series. I can’t listen to the In Death series because the narrator also does the VI Warshowski series and she sounds too old to be Eve in my head. I also like Kathleen Early on the Karin Slaughter audios. But there are other narrators I can hear on a variety of books and it doesn’t phase me ??? But yes I can’t listen to the second narrator on the Gaslight mysteries.

    • Thank you! I hope you are settling well after your move. I still have some things to go through and put in placed. But yes, my reading is so MOODy. I prefer ComicCon because it’s more scifi/fantasy rather than romance. I do love romance but my absolute favorites are the UF which isn’t always at book conferences. I am considering some mystery/thriller conferences at some point because I have read almost everything and everybody in that genre at one point. I hope you get to go to some conferences and meet some of your favorite authors! Ilona Andrews actually came to my local Barnes & Noble in 2017 and it was awesome. I’d already met them but they are such a joy.

  3. What kind of car do you have? I have never seen anywhere around here to charge a car. Maybe I’m not looking for it so I miss it? Glad you have several places you can charge yours! Thats awesome!

    • I have a Chevy Volt hybrid. 50-60 miles a day on electric charge and 350 on gas tank. It will plug into a regular outlet at home with the special cord and so usually I just plug in overnight and I’m ready to go in the morning. On our long, lots of travel Mondays, I can’t make it on the 50 miles electric so I charge at the college campus or the park. There are a couple apps I use Chargepoint and Plugshare to find plug ins. The college campuses have them (only 2) and some city parks, some MacDonalds, Whole Foods, the local hospitals and several parking garages have at least 1-4 spots. Sometimes it is free and sometimes there is a charge.

    • That’s what counts! I’d rather read a couple good books than lots and only still have a couple good ones. I seem to be able to get a huge quantity of amazing books. The freebies, and sometimes when I try a new author, are when I get some variable results. But I also like to try new things so that’s part of the bargain. That’s how I found my many of my favorites.

  4. You have had a busy week, Anne:). So sorry about the cancellations re the coronavirus – what a shame:(. Your reading mood has been very impressive – and I know what you mean about audiobook narrators – I had to DNF a book last month because I found the voice so very annoying. Have a great week:)

  5. Glad you’re taking time for you. When I’m struggling and find it difficult as I’m out and up, I often think of what I’d do if I had vacation time and then I go and do it right away. It’s motivating. ‘Something Secret this way comes’ sounds interesting.

    • I’m more likely to do what I most think needs doing to meet my current goals. Unless I’m really tired or unsure how to get to my goal, then I read to give myself a break to figure things out.

I read Something Secret Comes This Way about 7 years ago; she’s a Canadian author. The blog I first reviewed for was a Canadian blog.

  6. Reading moods are a definite thing and sometimes you’ve just gotta roll with them… At least you’re reading and enjoying what you’re reading. 🙂

The coronavirus thing is worrying but I’m nowhere close to panicked yet. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for a lot of people over here who are clearing the shelves of everything…

Nicci @ Sunny Buzzy Books recently posted: Weekly Update #102
    • I don’t mind my reading moods until I start feeling pressure because I have finished my ARCs. But I read such a wide variety of genres and that helps me not have reading slumps I think. I can’t recall ever having a reading slump, only binges and moods.

Yes we are staying home but that is not unusual.

  7. Glad you were able to get out on the trails with Lulu even though cheese was a bit of a disaster. We discovered its not a good idea with the cats either. 🙂 I had to chuckle about your Gaslight Mysteries craze. I haven’t been that focused on my reading mood rebellions, but I have gone off the plan each week so I’m in a similar boat.
That is so cool that Emerald City con will work out after all for you this year..

    Have a good week, Anne!

    • Thank you Sophia! I hope you are having an amazing week. It is definitely a reading rebellion. I only have 3 left and I am out of books. Sigh. At least there is a new one in April. I’ll have to see when they reschedule ECCC to decide if I can go. If it’s too close to DragonCon I won’t. Be healthy and happy reading!

  8. I am a mood reader also, and sometimes I’ll sign up for a book that I’m in the mood to read, but then when it comes time to read it, I’m in the mood for something else. I know what you mean about switching to your kindle and having the previous books narrator in your head. I just got done listening to a series when the narrator uses an English accent, and now when I’m reading my kindle I keep hearing that English accent. LOL I love 70’s weather and being able to be outside. It sounds like I need to check out the Gaslight Mysteries, since they have you devouring them one agter another, and staying up late 🙂 Happy Reading Anne!

    • Yes I can really recommend the Gaslight mysteries. I love the characters SO much. They aren’t really long books either, so that helps. Your point about requesting and then not being in the mood later is exactly right. Fortunately, I have such a large TBR there is always something I want to read!

Anne - Books of My Heart recently posted: Audio: Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey
  9. I guess you could say I am in a mood with my reading as well. I am going to try to get some of my ARCs done this week but last week I focused on other books and loved it. I have tickets to see Patricia Briggs in St. Louis in April. When I saw the announcement, I feared she would be canceling that one but it is still on for now. How nice that you were able to bring Lulu with you! My dogs wouldn’t be able to behave themselves if I were to take them out for a full day. Nice new reads. I hope you have a great week!

    • Yes I would love to go to MO and meet you too but not while my daughter has school stuff right now. Lulu was good except she got cheese all over the car seat. I should have known better. Surprisingly I am pretty on track even though I have been reading a Gaslight mystery every day pretty much. I’m not doing much else though. I need to do some Audible Escape before my deal runs out this month. I’m hoping for more energy over spring break when we don’t have to go anywhere.

Anne - Books of My Heart recently posted: COYER Friends Results
  10. Sometimes I just want to read what I want to read, too! I do love getting caught up in a series. Getting behind in review books kind of sucks, but in the scheme of things it’s okay. So you post a little later than you wanted. I figure I’ll get to it when I can and just have to try and not worry about it.

I always have a supply of food and essentials because we have to be prepared in case of earthquakes out here in California, so I think I’m okay, and I even have powdered eggs and milk. Also canned milk. It’s crazy out there now with supplies, though. My husband went to the store today and he said it’s all picked over. No toilet paper! Thank goodness we don’t need any, but it’s crazy.

    • Yes! I’m in pretty good shape for this week and after today I should be able to start on next week’s reviews. Next week is spring break so I’ll get in more reading I hope.

We have a good stock but I am a bit worried about when we need to replenish. Hopefully the stores will have also replenished by then.

  11. We planted lettuce this weekend as well. I can’t wait for warmer weather. I hope you enjoy all of your books and have a great week!

  12. I’m assuming Lulu is a dog, but I’m not sure because you mentioned a dog park and “her college” and then making a mess with a cheeseburger. A dog wouldn’t get it’s own cheeseburger, would she? But then a college student wouldn’t make a total mess with cheese….trying to picture both scenarios in my mind. LOL

I hope you do get to do the ECCC next year!

  13. Sounds like you really found a series that you’re enjoying so I’m glad you dived in and went for it. The weather has been improving here as well but like you, we had some pretty hard rains last week. Of course all I saw was pawprints EVERYWHERE. I’ll be glad when it dries out some. So no more cheese huh? Cass would turn up his nose at a burger without cheese. I think the coronavirus is changing tons of people’s plans. I’m not surprised Briggs canceled the appearance. Hope you have a wonderful week!

    • Lulu has been trained to sit on the mat inside the door until we clean her paws. She’s only 2 and doesn’t seem to understand cheese. She is getting fussy about eating potato chips without some kind of dip though!

I’m not surprised about the cancellations because ECCC is in Seattle and that is where it started in the US. I’m just glad I decided I couldn’t go because it was expensive for airfare, hotel etc and I doubt I could have cancelled the reservations.

This week looks good with warmer temps and less rain. I got the lettuce in yesterday but I have more seeds to plant. Maybe tomorrow.

  14. That’s a lot of reading, I’m not familiar with the Gaslight mysteries so I’ll look it up.

I love that you took your dog with you! My dog Patches LOVED dbl cheeseburgers at McDonald’s. My dog Kaiyo loves anything and everything 🙂

I think I’m all set if we’re quarantined here. I lived out in the boonies for about 25 years always had a supply of everything I needed because most stores were very far from us. Even though I moved to town a little over a year ago I still keep everything stocked up out of habit.

  15. I’m a mood reader so I totally get where you’re coming from. I have several ARCs I really need to read but keep shoving them aside in favor of other books I’m in the mood for. That’s great that you’re enjoying the Gaslight Mysteries so much. I’ve never read one but you have me very tempted to check them out.

  16. Sounds like another busy week Anne. And good for you that you’re reading the mysteries that you want too! 😉
And it sounds like you’re just meant to be going to that Emerald City Comic Con, with it rescheduling now. I hope to be able to go to some kind of comic con or book event one day. There just aren’t that many around here, so I’d have to travel to another country which isn’t very affordable. But one day…
Have a great week and happy reading.

  17. Jen

I hope the travel works out for you. I think we’ll be seeing lots and lots of cancellations over the next couple of months. I’m sad b/c I fear my daughter’s class trip to DC will need to be cancelled. But we’ll just roll with it. Hope you guys have a good week ahead.

    • Yes we will see what the next couple months bring. It hasn’t even been rescheduled yet. My daughter’s classes should start mid-August. But we will see. I’m so glad I told my daughter she would have to wait at least one year before considering the art history trip to France. It’s expensive and she doesn’t have her health issues in hand yet. This year might get cancelled anyway.
