Sunday Post – 24 May 2020 @kimbacaffeinate @readingreality @Tynga

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly  @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week, and showcase books and things we have received.

Stacking The Shelves is also a weekly meme hosted by  Tynga’s Reviews and Marlene from Reading Reality.  It’s all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.

Sunday, I did my usual blog visiting.  Both in the morning and evening, I sat on the swing with Lulu.  In the evening, I enjoyed the pleasant weather and watching fireflies while I listened to an audio.

Monday, I called a garden center and I’ve missed the broccoli plants until the fall planting.  I keep seeing a bunny in the neighbor’s yard but thankfully it is not visiting my garden. I picked the chard and made my favorite Julia Child recipe for it – Swiss Chard Gratineed.  After lunch, I decided I needed to pull the worst of the weeds in the yard and around the patio since it will start raining tonight and rain all week.   I remembered to look up my daughter’s grades online and she got an A in both classes!

Tuesday, I was feeling lackadaisical and then Sourcebooks put 10 of their first book  in a series free. That got me moving! My daughter finally got started on her new class. She’s been having stomach issues.   Wednesday continued the cold and rainy.  I got a delivery from Sam’s Club and then I went to the farmer’s market.  I got some strawberries and blueberries, and a shrub rose.  I drove around a bit to see how the construction is going on the new highway going in about 2 miles south of us. Thursday, more cold and rainy. I slept late.

Friday, I got another delivery and did a Walmart pickup. I’m stocking up on everything before things open so I can stay home even more.  I also spent a bunch of time trying to figure out what sorts after z and how to insert characters from other languages into the blog.  So far no luck.

Saturday, I got up determined to mow the lawn before the next rain. I wanted to do it Friday but was too tired.  I set right to work.  After I almost finished the front yard, I was so hot and tired I thought I would puke so I sat down in the shade a few minutes.  Then I managed to finish the front yard and do the whole back yard.  I pulled a few weeds and planted the knockout rose I got on Wednesday. Lulu joined me to rock on the swing .  I really need to trim all the bushes and I need to get some pine straw to help contain the weeds on 2 sides of the house.

For dinner, I had another yummy salad with lettuce from the garden. I got peaches in my Aldi order so I made peach crisp for dessert.  I’ve had a moody week with reading. I’m having trouble reading / listening. Well,  it’s actually starting a new read; once I’m 10 % or so into it it’s fine.  I’m well past that in my current read and listen so it’s better now.

Thanks everyone who follows the blog by email, Bloglovin or Feedly.  I’ve seen the increase of Bloglovin followers over the past few weeks.  Personally, I am using Feedly and email, so I am not following people on Bloglovin, even if I AM following them.    Thank you!

Happy Memorial Day!  Even if you are not in the US, you can honor your service veterans. They sacrifice so much for all of us.

Things I Learned This Week:

OK  if I’m asking for help, I’m also going to share the cool things I learn. You may already know them but hopefully it will help someone.

I’ve been tired of typing $0.99 for books sales for Twitter or Facebook and decided I should learn how to get the ¢ sign.   I finally got around to googling it.  Hold down the Alt, type 0162.  It works in Microsoft Windows, Twitter, Facebook and here.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality.  These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):

Thanks so much to Brilliance Audio,  and PRH Audio.

(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)

I grabbed this one in a favorite genre as an Audible Daily deal.

Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT  they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

If you like this and want to see me do the Sunday post, as often as I can manage, leave me a comment and let me know.

Anne

  1. I haven’t heard of source books, I’ll have to look into it. I’ve been getting my books from ‘friends of the library mailbox’ the latest mail box looked like a London Police phone call box. pretty awesome!

    • I’m sure I will as Amy Daws is wild. I remember her from BB and also she did a zoom play with Erin Mallon that was zany fun. I’m so happy to see you out in the blogsphere now that you have a bit more time. Thanks for visiting.

  2. Busy week! Congrats to your daughter on the A in both classes. Hope she feels better.

Too bad about the broccoli! Sounds like you still have a great garden going though. I finally started my balcony garden this week ?.

Sometimes I really wish we had a house with a big yard. And then I read posts like yours where you’re mowing (be careful you don’t get heat stroke!), pruning bushes, weeding, etc and I think, maybe my little balcony isn’t so bad? Lol!

Have a great week and stay safe!

    • Thank you! Yeah it’s the conundrum. I want a garden but not so much any other yard work It would be fine if I could just hire everything else but I think I should do it and save the money. The really tall bushes I will hire though. I love fresh tomatoes from the garden even if it probably is cheaper to just buy them at the farmer’s market. So enjoy!

  3. Peach crisp sounds good! I’ve been doing some gardening here also, cleaning out weeds and pulling out the ever annoying poison ivy that seems to grow each year even though we spray it yearly and pull it out. I also seeded my sunflowers, I hope they make it this year. Last year they were all eaten up by squirrels and rabbits.
Enjoy your books, I liked Knight on the Texas Plains.

    • I had problems in Minnesota with squirrels and rabbits and deer. I don’t know why but it is ok here so far. Squirrels were the worst with the tomatoes. They didn’t eat them, just take a bite and throw them all over the yard. Maybe it’s the dog out in the yard chasing them several times a day. lol So many freebies this week. I’ve read one already.

  4. As ever, reading your post makes me feel tired:). You have been working really hard on your garden, recently – and I hope that rabbit keeps right away as they are so very destructive once they start nibbling… Congratulatons to your daughter on her two A grades – she clearly has been working hard. I hope you manage to have a good reading week, despite the difficulty to initially getting into your books.

    • Thank you! I am certainly enjoying the garden and feel thrilled the rabbit has not visited. It could be the zoomie little dog running around the yard several times a day. I hope this weird reading stops. It seems to take me 2-3 days to get into a book, usually I’d have finished it in 2-3 days.

  5. Another week where you’ve been very busy Anne! And mowing can be hard work especially when it’s hot. I hope next week will be more relaxing for you!

  6. Congratulations to your daughter on acing her classes! I hope her stomach feels better soon.

Can you come work on my garden? Just kidding — but I’m impressed with your energy and dedication. My gardening skills are pretty poor, and my interest in working in the heat is low, but I do miss having a lovely garden. (Of course, the frozen shoulder would make gardening pretty hard this year.)

Thank you for the tip on the cents sign. I’ve added it to my HTML cheat sheet. And that’s an amazing number of Kindle and audio freebies — wow!

  7. Wow you had a good week it seems! There were so many great freebies this week! I need to pull weeds too but my allergies are really bad and both the tree and grass pollen is high right now. That is (literally) a deadly combo for me so I try to do no more than 15-20 min a day. But there are a lot of weeds…

    • Yeah I’ve never been good with pollen either. I couldn’t mow as a teenager. I’m much better now with Allegra and Nasonex. So I’ve been learning about some of the yard work things. I tend to go at it 100% one day and then avoid it until absolutely necessary.

  8. If I had a backyard I would be planting too but our apartment complex doesn’t have space for anything like that. I’ve been seeing a bunny next door every once in a while too.

    • I love seeing the bunny even if it might be a threat to the garden. In Minnesota I lived on a lake and I saw bald eagles and raccoons, deer and of course, bunnies. I absolutely hated the squirrels as they were the worst pests in the garden. I worried about out 15lb dog with the eagles.

Thanks for visiting! I hope things improve for you; I know it’s a difficult time.

  9. That sale from Sourcebooks was AWESOME!! Even though I have read a few of them, there were some I haven’t gotten to. Love free or even discounted books. Happy Memorial Day!!

  10. That was smart of you to slip in another set of orders before that option is down with the opening of the state. Fresh salad from the garden and peach crumble sounds great. Whew, it sure warmed up fast around here. I was collapsed in some shade myself after shoveling soil into my new raised bed garden plot. Definitely want to pace ourselves. LOL
Yay for your daughter getting her A’s. Loved that Sourcebooks First in Series freebie b/c there were a handful that I hadn’t read yet and was interested in. I went a bit crazy getting freebies this week. 😉

Have a great Memorial Day, Anne!

    • Thank you Sophia! Have a lovely weekend! Yes it was a wild freebie week. The weather here is warmer and more rainy the last couple weeks. It’s raining 5 days a week instead of 1, and we’re in the 80s now. I knew I should have done more yardwork when the weather was perfect.

  11. I wish we had fireflies here. I miss seeing them. That is awesome you caught the Sourcebooks deal. I’m sorry I missed it.

I feel you about wanting to stay in even more so as everything re-opens. Evidently we are in an “accelerated phase 2” now, which means dining in restaurants is allowed, malls are opening this week, and a few other stores that had to stay closed before. There’s the part of me that things this is all moving too fast. It doesn’t help that so many people aren’t taking the recommended precautions–wearing masks and social distancing–seriously. Fortunately, my employer is still of the mind of following public health’s recommendation and not the politicians.

It looks like you got some great sounding books! I’ve read Black-Eyed Susans and enjoyed it. I hope you will too. Have a good week, Anne. Stay safe and well.

    • Thank you! I put all those deals and freebies on my Twitter and facebook daily, because some of them are just one day. It’s always in the afternoon, in fact, that’s up next on my computer stuff.

I’m totally with you on the I think it’s too soon. I’m glad you can work from home. I am grateful we can stay home and will continue to do so, also wear masks if we must go out. If I’m wrong, I’m not hurting anyone. If I’m right we will all be safer. I hope I am wrong.

Thanks for the info about Black-eyed Susans.

  12. Congrats to the two A! Guess your daughter is happy as heck about that. We have some mixed weather here. Rain and sun and all in all it feels more like April than end of May. Happy Memorial Day to you and your loved ones and stay safe and well.

  13. Listening to audiobooks while watching fireflies sounds so peaceful.
Congrats to your daughter on her A’s!
My husband is always out in the veggie patch all the time at the moment and he’s been really on top of the grass cutting but the garden at the front needs work, namely, it needs to be weeded and the rosemary bushes (of which there are many) need trimming completely back. The reason it’s not done? The front has been designated my domain and I’m not a fan of any gardening work, lol.

Hope you have a good week Anne!

  14. Nice that you got some relaxing time on the porch, and that your garden is still doing well. I’m not looking forward to the heat next week. We have temps over 100 coming. Good for you that you get rain.

I enjoyed Black Eyed Susans. Hope you do too. Have a great Memorial Day!

    • Thanks for letting me know about Black-eyed Susans. It looked good. Of course, I bought it which is putting it in the TBR of doom. I can’t believe how hot it is there in Northern CA! We have only gotten to 80s here in NC and I have loved the 60-70s it has been the last few months. I guess the rain is good for the garden but it also makes the lawn and weeds grow well.

  15. Jen

Sounds like a pretty good week. Yea for your daughter’s good grades, I hope she feels better soon.

  16. Sourcebooks regularly posts freebies, although 10 at the same time was a bit unusual. It sounds like you had a busy week. I am so glad that my husband takes care of the yard! Congrats to your daughter for getting A’s in her classes. I hope you enjoy all of your new books and have a wonderful week, Anne!

  17. Congrats on your daughter’s A’s. I bet you’re so proud. I’d love to see a pic of you and Lulu on the swing. How sweet. I seriously think I need to pick up Deja Dead and The Scottish Connection. They both look super cool. Stay safe and that’s a great idea about stocking up now!

    • Thank you! I’ll try to post some pics next week maybe. It’s going to rain all week except today though. I am staying stocked but not obnoxiously so. I just buy one package of things regularly as I am running out but my freezer is full of things we like. Since we don’t eat every one of them every week, it is well stocked. So I’m not hoarding, just making sure I have our regular stuff. I definitely have a bit more ahead than usual though.

    • Yes I already have almost as many followers as I do by email. I like the way Bloglovin sends a daily email and a weekly wrap up. But I much prefer Feedly as a reader since after I read them all it marks it and I can mark things to read later. So I’m following many people on Feedly, rather than Bloglovin which is weird.
