I thought I understood power.

My parents taught me that magic attracts equal danger, and everything I've seen since becoming a demon contractor confirms it. I've witnessed how power twists and corrupts--and I've tasted power no human should wield.

I thought I knew greed.

Ambition and avarice drove my family into hiding. My parents died for someone else's greed. I've never hunted anything in my life, but now I'm hunting their killer--with my demon's help.

I thought I'd seen evil.

But with each step closer to my parents' murderer, I'm uncovering a different sort of evil, piece by hidden piece. I've stumbled into an insidious web that silently, secretly ensnares everything it touches. My demon and I came as the hunters...

...but I think we might be the prey.

Guild Codex Demonized  series is a different aspect of the Guild Codex Spellbound world. I have read the Spellbound series. I would say you can read Demonized without Spellbound first but I wouldn’t. I really prefer to read in order, yes,  but there is also background on the world, the guilds and some of the characters which is really helpful if you ever have first book in a series issues. PLUS  the Spellbound books are awesome!

Things progress like wildfire in Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped! I thought with Tori going out of town after a little work with Robin at the beginning maybe not much would happen.  Robin and Zylas learn a lot this time.  Of course, there are more attacks on the guilds. They help AND figure out why the attacks are happening.

Robin makes progress both with translating information in the grimoire and in working with Zylas.  I won’t spoil the story by outing who ends up working with them.  They work so hard to figure things out and make things better for demons and the guilds, and even innocent human victims.  Robin and Amalia are building a good relationship but Robin definitely spends most of her time with Zylas. Robin and Zylas get much closer now.

I loved this with its building relationships.  We continue to learn much more about demons and demon magic. The enemies are starting to become clear, too.  Now if Tori comes back into town and teams up with Robin things should get even more exciting!

Narration:

Cris Dukehart is now my comfort zone for these connected series. She has really added to my enjoyment with her performance.  I love how both these series have female leads, even though their personalities are different.  Her male and female voices seem appropriate.  Dukehart is one of my favorite narrators.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

About Annette Marie

Annette Marie is the author of YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced urban fantasy, bold heroines, and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She proudly admits she has a thing for dragons, and her editor has politely inquired as to whether she intends to include them in every single book.

Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad). She shares her life with her remarkably patient, comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

    • They really are fun! There is good world and character building but they are less onerous than some other fantasy books. I should say the good guys get lots of character and the bad guys are simply evil, greedy not as well-developed but it’s all fun. I have enjoyed this series on audio.

  1. I LOVED this book so much! My favourite Mage working with Robin and Zylas made me all kinds of happy… I’m terrified for what’s in store for the Crow and Hammer crew in the remaining books of the two series but I have faith it’ll all work out well!
I’m also super stoked for the arrival of the second spin-off (Warped) in August! 🙂
