The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly  @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week, and showcase books and things we have received.

Stacking The Shelves is also a weekly meme hosted by  Tynga’s Reviews and Marlene from Reading Reality.  It’s all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.

Sunday, I slept late for some reason, I guess I was catching up on poor sleep other nights. I did my usual blog visiting and when replying to comments about tomatoes I decided I had to eat one. There’s nothing like fresh tomatoes. One of our neighbors is opening a gelato business but there has been some delays but they have the gelato, so we got a pint of salted caramel gelato delivered.   I stayed up later than usual because my daughter finished the 5 inch seed stitch border on the blanket and wanted me to help her learn how to bring in the 3 colors with the new stitch pattern for the next part of the blanket.

Oh the joy, and the crushing sadness.  One of my daylilies bloomed, but another one got chopped off because it stormed last night and an empty  garbage can blew onto it.  My daughter helped me start putting together the new grill but we stopped after an hour to go make dinner.  Pasta with fresh pesto using basil from the garden.

I have slept late a couple days this week with not sleeping as well at night.  Wednesday, I got a Penzeys contactless pickup order because they had a special on my favorite spice, Revolution.  I drove around a bit to look at the work on 540 which is being built just a few miles from our home.  Also, the street in front is being resurfaced and it is really nice blacktop.  I had a tomato cut up in a salad yesterday and a another one today sliced  on a turkey sandwich. I finished both my book and audiobook so I have to start new ones on both which is really hard these days.  Also, a new daylily bloomed.  I did my usual after dinner watering and patio swing with Lulu & the fireflies.

I helped my daughter send emails to fall class instructors to find out what software they will use and a particular time for Zoom meetings or something, if they will have one day a week for assignments being due, etc.  Her summer class everything was on Wednesday.  So the problem is if all the classes have everything due on Wednesday (or their Zoom meeting at the same time), that’s not as easy to handle as if they have different days, or they are inconsistent. We also saw she got an A in her summer class!

My phone did an update and then it had no memory.  So I deleted apps and crap I never use.  I also made sure all my photos were on my computer, and deleted many from the phone.  I did some weeding, put a fence up for 1/4 of the backyard and started spraying the weed killer.  It ran out quickly.  I had a refill but nothing I did could make it spray.

Friday was a blur of activity.  I went out to do a Walmart pickup but since they out of stocked the main reason I placed an order – GF bread –  I placed an order for a different location that night.  I got the dishwasher loaded up and going. My daughter was up and we finished putting together the grill. Another daylily bloomed!  I had gotten a new sprayer weed killer at Walmart and I tested it; it works fine.  Then since I was hot and filthy anyway, I scrubbed one floor and vacuumed upstairs and down. After a quick shower, I started the laundry.  I finally got to some emails and Feedly but then it is time to go to the 2nd Walmart pickup.  At least it started raining, so I didn’t have to water the garden.

Saturday, I didn’t do much besides reading and some planning. It threatened to rain all afternoon with some thunder but didn’t.  I should have watered but didn’t.  It’s always in the mid 90s now (33C?) and a threat of rain in the afternoon.  I really want to get to work on the weedkiller but it’s better without rain.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality.  These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):

NOTHING.

(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)

I pre-ordered both Engagement and Espionage by Penny Reid, and Peace Talks by Jim Butcher.  There was a $1.99 Kindle deal on Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews and it was one of theirs I didn’t own somehow.  The 50 Mystery and Detective Masterpieces you have to read before you die  was on sale for 49¢.

Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT  they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

If you like this and want to see me do the Sunday post, as often as I can manage, leave me a comment and let me know.

Anne

  1. What a busy week!!! I’m tired for you ?

The Gelato sounds nice – my favorite has always been pistachio. What a hard time to try and start a food service businesses though ?

I’ve said it before, but I’m jealous of your garden. It seems like each week I learn you have another plant that I didn’t know you had. What all are you growing exactly? I know it must be a lot of work – but so worth it when the flowers bloom and you get to enjoy fresh veggies, like your tomatoes. We cooked 4 of my tomatoes for dinner last night and it was great. The squirrels got at my tomato plant last night though and I found one bitten out of, partially barried in my Zinnia ?.

Congrats to your daughter for her summer A! I hope classes work out this fall without too much trouble. This situation is so complicated, but I’d hope they have a plan to keep things consistent and not all at the same time ?

I’m going to see if the Lauren Blakely is still free, I love her! Have a great week and stay safe!! Hugs!

    • Thank you. I don’t have too much right now but I’m working on that and may add another garden bed this fall. I just have tomatoes, chard and green beans in the actual garden bed. The chard is ready to eat and it doesn’t like the heat. But the only way I like to eat it takes time and I haven’t felt like making it yet. In the fall I will plant spinach, lettuce and broccoli. The smaller bed has herbs and a rose bush and I put one tomato there since the rose bush is still small. The herbs are mint, rosemary and basil, and chives. Then I have daylilies along the east side of the house I just planted mid June. Along the south side of the house between our patio and the house is a small strip which is mostly rocks but I am slowly adding soil and flowers. I just have one daylily there and one planting of std dwarf bearded iris. I’ve ordered some more SDB iris and a couple daylilies to plant there which will come in the fall.

Squirrels are the devil. They used to ruin all my tomatoes in MN. Here between the dog and the bed being right next to the house (far from their trees) they aren’t as bad. But I did find one with a bit yesterday and a few with insects eating them.

We’ve been discussing what classes she might take and why. No decisions but we have to drop some this week or pay for them all. She really loves languages but wants to do that in person. She can do the learning center with a mask but she just does not want to go out. She goes out less than me, only to doc appts which aren’t telemedicine. I did find out that her community college is actually rated as the #1 online college in the country which I didn’t know and she’s been attending there part-time for years. I did choose classes with teachers who were both highly rated and had taught their course online in previous years, so they aren’t figuring the online thing out on the fly.

    • No not always. Mostly I feel like I don’t get anything done. Friday I couldn’t stand it and did some stuff. I say I’m going to get to sewing / quilting stuff every day but I’m doing more helping my daughter with her knitting than my own stuff. But that’s ok. I’m enjoying doing stuff with her with the school break.

  2. I wish it would rain here! It’s been so long and I am tired of watering everything twice a day!! I have my first tomatoes sprouting on my tomato plant and I am SO EXCITED!!!
Hope you have a great week!

    • YAY tomatoes. They love this heat. I’m only managing to water once a day at most. But we are getting the afternoon squall that I think is a daily thing in Florida for the past week with thunder showers between 2-5 for only an hour or so. I wish it wouldn’t rain every day because I want to do the weedkiller and it works better if it is dry.

  3. Salted Gelato sounds great. I’ve been think of making my own frappe’s. I heard you just need to add some coffee icecubes, cream and throw it in the blender, but we’ll see.

  4. Jen

I played the battle of the phone space for years and finally splurged and got one with more memory than I’ll ever use. At least I can download books and movies now and not worry about the space! And now I want gelato. YUM!

    • Well I thought I got the one with more memory than I would ever use. It’s the same thing with hard drive space over the last 40 years. For a long time, the one I wanted was always $2,000 wholesale. They are MUCH cheaper now. My phone is 4 years old but since Charlie Hunnam has touched it I won’t ever get rid of it. 🙂 He touched my one before this several times and I keep it as a backup phone.

  5. Last year I did some major moving of things in my flower beds and suddenly a bunch of day lilies popped up. I have them again this year and they are thriving! We had a large storm come through and a huge branch fell on my largest sega palm. Took off part of one side and now I have to trim it to look even. You had a productive week.

  6. I do tend to sleep later since the lockdown. Maybe all these news and weird times are wearing us out???

  7. Yes… I’m having trouble getting up at a reasonable time – which isn’t great for my productivity. Your garden is going great guns – what a pretty colour your day lily is:)). I have finished reading Peace Talks, too – but need to sit down and write the review. I hope the coming week is a good one for you, Anne:)).

  8. I am just loving the pictures of your garden there, I am envious. I can’t wait to garden again. Its so rejuvenating to be able to do it right? Looks like such a busy filled week but I see a Jim Butcher book…hope you enjoy that one!!

  9. You are a ball of fire even with fitful sleep. It’s been sweltering here, but only a couple days did we get rain so I get up at dawn to water and do my outside chores before the heat sets in. My mouth started watering at the mention of your tomatoes because mine are big enough and now just need to start turning red. Can’t wait. Yay for your daughter’s A. Hope the fall classes can stagger the Zoom appointments and assignments for her.
    Enjoy that grill!

    Have a good week, Anne!

    • Thanks Sophia! I am loving the garden. The tomatoes love the hot. And it’s HOT 97 today with a feel of 104. I don’t feel like my usual ball of fire self – I feel like a slug. I usually do a lot more. The heat doesn’t help or the uncertainty of things, but I am so glad we have the AC again. Have a great week! Stay safe.

  10. Construction on 540, 90+ degree heat, and rain in the afternoon? Are you located near Raleigh by any chance? Asheville is home but one of my favorite aunts is located in Raleigh so I’ve spent my share of sweltering summer days there!

I coincidentally started Small Favor by Jim Butcher this week. I guess he has a new book coming out? I’ve seen it mentioned in a few places.

I had to backup photos and delete them off my phone this week too. It’s amazing how we never have enough memory, no matter how much we have! Enjoy your week!

  11. I hadn’t had a garden for many years (not since the 70s), but now I am longing for one. Sigh.

Thanks for sharing your photos and for visiting my blog.

    • yes, I had to hunt down cash. I never use cash. I can have the same 20s in my wallet for a decade. I had some ones in my wallet, then I found another one in my bathroom. It was down to change in my bathroom, leftover foreign coins, or going through the pockets of my daughter’s ski jacket for the baggie with $5 and id info. Suitcases for laundry change, parking meter change in the car, and my desk drawer were other possibilites.

  12. Sounds like you’ve had a full week! I too have been needing to catch up on sleep. It’s my goal this week. I love what you are doing with your garden. Your flowers are so bright and cheery! I wish you a great week!

  13. Mmmm, gelato sounds so good right now. I hope you enjoyed it. My sleep pattern has been off for a while now too. Staying up later and waking up later. I don’t know what I’m going to do when we finally make it through this pandemic and my commuter is longer than walking down the stairs to my computer, lol.

    • Gelato is yummy but we can’t have it every day. I hope more companies will allow work-from-home for the employees who want it in the future. It does require a decent desk / chair and other things like decent computer and Internet for most people or good phone lines, depending on the type of work.

  14. I need to use more of my tomatoes. It’s been hot and they’re getting overly ripe. Glad to hear your day lilies are blooming and you’re enjoying the show. I love thunder and lightening storms. So atmospheric.

I need to get a copy of Engagement and Espionage. Love Cletus and Jennifer! I’ll have to check if they have an audio.

  15. It sounds like you have had a busy week, I love you garden, I have some lilies that are tired to stakes as they are just so high and for some reason its been really windy here too, they aren’t in bloom yet but I have my fingers crossed they don’t snap.

Enjoy your new reads and have a good week.

  16. Congrats on your daughter’s A. I hope things go smoothly this fall but at least you know she’s safe at home. Death by garbage can lid – how horrible. Hope you can save it somehow. It’s been hectic here as my Gpa is in the hospital still and they are trying to determine if he has early onset dementia (considering hie just turned 99 I don’t think it’s early) or if his sleep patterns were messed up and caused confusion and PTSD on his end. Plus it’s been so hot here that even the pups seem miserable. Hope you have a great week.

  17. Salted caramel gelato… fresh pesto pasta… I’m now officially hungry. (As I sit here snacking on fresh pineapple) 🙂 Both sound marvelous. I hope you get some better sleep this week.

  18. Fresh tomatoes are the absolute best! I haven’t found a good farmer’s market here and I miss tomatoes the most! I’m sorry to hear about your day lily. So sad. Sounds like you have a lot of fun things going on and congrats to your daughter on her A! Hope you’re having a great week.

  19. Sorry about your poor day lily! But it sounds like your garden is generally doing well. And your pasta pesto looks delicious. Fresh basil – yum!

I hope you start sleeping better soon. Not sleeping well is no fun. (I speak from experience!) Tell your daughter “well done!” on her summer class, and I hope everything works out for the next batch of classes.

Fresh pesto is the best and so easy to make! That Penny Reid book is eye catching. Enjoy.

  21. Disturbed sleep seems to be a prevalent thing at the moment. My sleeping patterns are all out of whack. 🙁

I’m loving the veggies coming out of the garden at the moment! We don’t have basil plants though, I tired to grow them but they failed. (Should have left it to my husband who seems to be a plant whisperer, lol.)

    • I’ve found I need to be aware if something is a cool or warm plant, more than I did in Minnesota. With sort of 3 growing seasons here, the tomatoes, green beans, basil and rosemary are all about the warm season. These need sun and warmer temps. My grandma was a plant whisperer. I just try to follow the instructions and sometimes it works.
