A woman is found naked, badly beaten and barely alive in the New Mexico mountains. The shocking discovery plunges Albuquerque Detective Alyssa Wyatt into a case that will test her to the limit.

It appears that Callie McCormick is the latest plaything of a shadowy psychopath that leaves a long shadow on the streets of New Mexico – an individual linked to a string of deaths but leaving no evidence.

But when Alyssa makes a breakthrough that just might reveal the killer, she unknowingly puts herself in the crosshairs of a brutal maniac – one with an old score to settle.

What a terrifying and gut-wrenching ride!  All His Pretty Girls is an exciting story with the two main characters being a cop and the criminal.  I wouldn’t have noticed this as much, but I just read a science fiction story with this same dynamic.   It’s really frightening how difficult it is for cops to catch the criminal unless they get lucky or the criminal makes a mistake.

Alyssa is a cop who leads her team. She has devoted her life to trying to find the missing and reunite families. She has good people working with her. They work long hours and do everything possible when a woman goes missing.

Alyssa’s family is wonderful, a husband and two children.  They all have the usual squabbles but they love each other.  Her husband, Brock,  is really a calming influence, and a real rock as far as support and help.  Alyssa lost her parents right after high school, so she appreciates having her own family.

The criminal takes us along on his inner, crazed dialogue. He is brutal and angry with his victims.  As he watches the investigation, memories of his childhood start coming back.  He didn’t have it easy. He takes us along memory lane with his first murder and moving forward to present.

This dark and violent thriller is exciting with quite the twists.  I really enjoyed this and hope to see more of this detective and her team.

Narration:

This was a new narrator to me. At the start, the voice sounded too low for Alyssa but it leveled after a bit.  The younger voices were higher and lighter whether male or female.  It was comfortable and felt appropriate.  I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.

  1. Oh wow – this sounds like a really intense dynamic, Anne. Glad you enjoyed this one – it’s always a bonus to discover a great new series.

  2. It’s hard getting the criminal’s POV sometimes. Especially if they’re dark and disturbed. Sounds like a thrilling read. Great review, Anne!
