A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear.

Sara's ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he's got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, for the county's sole female detective, Lena Adams - the first victim's sister - want to serve her own justice.

But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath.... or mean her death.

I started reading the Will Trent series late last year. I was adding the seventh book, Unseen, to my TBR list as one of my next listens, when I see a comment from a blogger friend, Jonetta, about don’t read the first paragraph of her review of Unseen if you haven’t read the Grant County series by Ms Slaughter. I had not started with the Grant County series, so I decided to take a break from Will and go back and listen to the original series.

So, the Grant County series follows Sara Linton, who becomes a large figure in the Will Trent series. She’s the county coroner and pediatrician. She’s out to lunch with her sister when she takes a bathroom break and finds an acquaintance, a local blind professor, dying in a bathroom stall. Sara has to work with her ex-husband, Jeffrey Tolliver, the local police chief, to find the killer.

I had a really good time with this first book in the series. I liked spending time with Sara during this time in her life and seeing her before she meets Will Trent. I also enjoyed meeting her ex-husband for the first time. I’ve heard a lot about him, but this is the first time I get page time with him.

I also really liked Detective Lena Adams, who is also the twin sister of the blind girl Sara found dying in the bathroom. I really liked Lena who had a really tough life, only to have this added to her traumatic life.

I can’t wait to get the next book in the series. I’m on the waitlist at the library.

Narration

Kathleen Early did a wonderful job with the narration of Blindsighted. This doesn’t surprise me at all, as she also narrates many of the books in the WIll Trent series that I’ve also listened to (she narrates all of the Audible books, but my library has some that include other narrators). I really enjoy her narration as she does a wonderful job with the voices and the emotions of each of the different characters.

  1. Great review, Anne. I know the name well – but I’ve never read any of Slaughter’s books. I think going the audio route might be a great option.

    • There are a couple of different narrators for the Will Trent series if you get them through the library (or at least the old CDs at my libaray), but I believe that this narrator has done the entire series for Audible. I’m listening to this series on Overdrive from the library and this has been the narrator for all of them.

    • This series actually takes place chronologically before the Will Trent series. You actually meet Sara Linton in this series way before she meets Will. I’ve really enjoyed this series so far as well. I just started listening to book three. I believe there are only four books in this series before Will Trent starts.
