My name is Kit Morris, and welcome to my warped life.

Picture the scene: Me, an average guy with psychic powers—not that my abilities are in any way average—just trying to scrape by in a harsh world. So maybe I've conned a few people, but did I really deserve to be thrown in MPD jail alongside magic-wielding serial killers?

According to Agent Lienna Shen, one-hundred-percent yes.

But her hardass attitude and “Arcana prodigy” status aren’t enough to bring down my former best friend, who slipped through the MPD’s fingers and is days away from unleashing untold horrors upon the city. Or he’s going to steal something. I don’t really know.

Whatever he’s up to, that’s why I’m sitting in an interrogation room with Lienna. And that’s why I just offered myself as her temporary new partner for the purposes of thwarting my ex-accomplice.

And that’s how I’m going to escape. I might even help with the case before I cut and run.

I continue to love the Guild Codex Spellbound  series and its world. I keep wondering when it will merge with Guild Codex Demonized.   There is a Guild Codex Universe on Goodreads which combines them for reading order.  The overall story arc is connected and like most urban fantasy, I would read them in order.

Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors introduces a set of new characters and some mythics with new skills.  The main character, Kit, is a male and he has not had an easy time of it, ever.  He knows he is different. He either gets bullied or used to do things.  Now he has been used by criminals and is in trouble himself. Unfortunately, that means he doesn’t have many friends who are good or bad.  His choices leave him with some big enemies going forward, too.

Kit spends most of his time trying to escape his incarceration. But when he sees what the criminals are doing, he does have a bit of conscience and help the MPD.  It doesn’t hurt that Lienna is attractive.  Kit has some definite character growth to make as he continues to navigate a life without his job with the criminal guild.

I’m not sure where Guild Codex Warped is going to fit into the storyline of the other two series.  I’m thrilled to have more of this world, though.  We mostly see the criminals and the MPD in this story. We see just a bit of the combat mages from my beloved Crow & Hammer.  So it is more of a stand alone here, other than understanding the world.  Personally, I always prefer to start at the beginning and read in order.  These Guild Codex books are all so great, that is what I would do!

Narration:

This series has a new narrator which is fitting with a male main character.  The voice seems a little young, maybe as it’s higher in pitch, but Kit isn’t all that old.  I was comfortable with the male and female voices and now this is Kit for me. I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.

About Annette Marie

Annette Marie is the author of YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced urban fantasy, bold heroines, and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She proudly admits she has a thing for dragons, and her editor has politely inquired as to whether she intends to include them in every single book.

Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad). She shares her life with her remarkably patient, comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

About Rob Jacobsen

Rob is a Canadian writer, actor, and director, who has been in a few TV shows you might watch, had a few films in festivals you might have attended, and authored some stories you might have come across. He’s hoping to accomplish plenty more by the time he inevitably dies surrounded by cats while watching reruns of Mr. Robot. Currently, he is the Creative Director of Cave Puppet Films, as well as the co-author of the upcoming Guild Codex: Warped book series with Annette Marie.

  1. I love the sound of this one! Particularly as mention that it is a bit lighter and fun. Now I’ve finished with the Heartstriker series, I’m missing an ongoing series to fill that niche…
