Ten years ago, half-Fae, half human Kerrigan Argon was discreetly dropped off onto the steps of Draco Mountain with nothing but a note. Her life changes completely as she’s swept into the care of the House of Dragons—an elite training program for gifted Fae.

On the year of her seventeenth name day, each student will be chosen by one of the twelve tribes of Alandria to enter society.

Everyone is chosen, except Kerrigan.

So, she strikes a bargain with the Dragon Society: convince a tribe to select her or give up her birthright forever.

With the unlikeliest of allies—Fordham Ollivier, the cursed Fae prince, who escaped his dark throne—she has to chart her own destiny to reshape the world.

I was excited for House of Dragons the moment I learned about it.  Odd, because I am not always a fan of young adult fantasy.  While there is a classification of fantasy romance, the story is not very focused on this aspect.  The main character, Kerrigan, is growing up in the House of Dragons. When they are 17, the royal houses select their student.

The world building is diverse with the royal houses, the various types of magic, and the dragons who bond with riders with the pairs becoming part of the society of dragons.  The Society is sort of a law enforcement organization because the dragons provide extra abilities to help with protecting the different lands.

When there are dragons ready to be bonded, there is a tournament.  The tournament is run by the House of Dragons.  There are survival fighting tests for the riders.  Kerrigan has been one of the tournament administrators in the past.

Kerrigan is growing and learning throughout this story.  She is just ready to go out into the world and be chosen by a royal house.  But she loves the dragons and adventures and her friends.  I was a bit unhappy with her being a special snowflake in some respects.  But I liked her character, her determination, her care for her friends and her love of the dragons.

I enjoyed this very much and look forward to what will happen next and learning more about the royal houses and the villains in the background. The ending is not a cliff hanger but there is clearly more to develop.  I definitely plan to continue reading this Royal Houses series.

Narration:

I recognized this narrator’s name but don’t believe I have listened to her in the past.  I was very satisfied with her male and female voices. We get Kerrigan’s point of view and she became Kerrigan for me.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.
