Detective Casey Duncan has noticed fewer and fewer residents coming in to the hidden town of Rockton, and no extensions being granted. Her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, presumes itā€™s the natural flux of things, but Caseyā€™s not so sure. Something bigger is happening in the small town they call home.

When an injured hiker stumbles from the woods, the sole survivor of a hostile attack, itā€™s all hands on deck. Even a member of the elusive Rockton council comes in to help. This council member also comes bearing news: Rockton is being shut down due to the hostile situation.

Casey and Eric must now race to save the town that has allowed residents to have a fresh start, away from the mistakes of their past, while also getting to the bottom of this latest attack.

I continue to love the Ā Rockton series.Ā  I would not try to read this as a standalone. The characters grow and change throughout the series. But mostly, each book is so good I would hate to miss any!Ā  I highly recommend them.

RocktonĀ  is more set up and has more things than the other people in the area.Ā  A Stranger in Town focuses mostly on murders and kidnappings.Ā  There are Danish tourists,Ā  two groups of settlers who used to live in Rockton, hostiles, and a violent trading group.Ā  The murders look like the hostiles’ work.Ā  Eric and Casey rescue one of the Danish who is badly injured.

There is a lot of action with grizzlies, and different groups who want Eric and Casey to find missing people. It’s pretty exhausting all the searching they do to find people and try to figure out how they died.Ā  The injured woman is not very helpful.Ā  Ā And it’s not just figuring out how people died, but as things continue they need to know why.

There isn’t much development of characters or relationships here.Ā  However, Casey and April work together more closely and forge a new closeness.Ā  Eric and Casey are also building Rockton’s connection with the settler groups, hostiles and even the Council as they figure out what is happening.

I really love this series and look forward to each new book. It is easy and fun to read, with plenty of engagement for the heart and mind.Ā  I highly recommend it.Ā  I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Narration:

I am a huge fan of Therese Plummer narrating this series.Ā  I am always excited to listen to her performance.Ā  The voices, both male and female, seem distinct to me. I recognize many character voices now.Ā  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

About Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could
write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a
story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls
and evil dolls, much to her teachersā€™ dismay. Today, she continues to
spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked
away in her basement writing dungeon. She lives in southwestern
Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

  1. Anne

    Hi,

The pub year above is wrong, it’s 2021. I thought it was new and since I’m a big fan too I didn’t think I’d missed one (or had forgotten about Danish tourists).

  2. Yep, this one had them running around chasing their tails a lot, but I loved how Casey didn’t put up with any of the people’s shenanigans who were involved. Love this series so much. For a thriller series they are the easiest and quickest reading. Glad to buddy up.

  3. I’m going to read this one today. I plan on shutting my computer off and enjoying the story! I’ll be listening to the audio in the future with my husband in the future as he’s a fan of the series, as well. I’ll come back to your review once I’ve posted mine.

Therese Plummer is one of my all-time favorite narrators! If I notice she’s the narrator I’m more likely to pick it up just based on her performance alone.

    • Yes I love her narration. I have always listened to audio on this series. The series was how I ended up reviewing audiobooks for MacMillan initially. When I was a newbie audio listener.
