For wealthy socialite Katrina Vandenburg, business meetings and charity galas are all part of her orderly, structured world—one that gets blown to hell after finding two dead bodies in the same day. The police think she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. FBI Special Agent Dayne Andrews thinks otherwise. Dayne and his K-9, Remy, are tracking a cold-blooded killer, and that trail...leads straight to Kat.

Kat and her rescue shelter—the Canine Haven—are the only common denominators between the murders, and Dayne is convinced she’s dead center in the killer’s sights. Protecting her will test every ounce of his steely resolve. She’s the most intriguing woman he’s ever met. And everything he shouldn’t want. Too bad neither of them seem to have gotten the memo.

And they need to focus on catching a killer now more than ever. Because if Dayne and Remy fail in their mission, nothing will stand between Kat and the killer’s deadly blade.

I’ve been enjoying this Federal K-9 series with its strong characters and of course, the dogs and the law enforcement aspects.   We still get glimpses of previous couples but those are very limited.

Trap N Trace is more focused on the law enforcement case with an FBI agent acting as a bodyguard to an heiress who was attacked.  He is somewhat involved in the investigation, but more with her protection which isn’t easy as she is well known.  One of her key charities is running a shelter, so even more dogs are in the picture.  But the dogs barely play a role other than one search and I like to see more of their skills.

Katrina learns a lot about herself and what she wants during this time. She has just been dumped by a guy who was only interested in her money.  She’s got an old childhood friend, who has money, and now wants to step in and basically acquire her to bolster himself.  Yeah, nobody liked him.

Dane, the FBI agent was a foster kid.  He has a great relationship with his adopted family and he’s good at his job.  He struggles with being too attracted to his witness, and feeling he will never fit in her world.  He succumbs to her charms and his own desires as they grow closer over time.  It felt realistic, but I also wished they had worked through more of the intellectual aspects rather than jumping in emotionally.

I enjoyed their story and the interesting group of friends they developed.  Dane and Kat have good hearts. They are kind and compassionate which they both needed in their lives.  Kat had been especially alone with users and hangers on, but limited real friends.  It’s a fun and mostly predictable romantic suspense.

Narration:

I have been so happy to be able to review these books on audio. I’m comfortable with Vanessa Daniels as the narrator for the series.  She has distinct voices for both male and female characters. There are some slight regional accents.   I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

    • I really enjoyed the book, all the books in this series. I particularly like when both the human and dog characters are developed and we see their personalities. And I appreciate when we get a strong mystery / action / investigation plot in addition to a romance. But yes, I like the personality of the dogs here, but I wished Remy would have been able to do more work. I really love seeing them use their skills and training but of course, it has to be appropriate to the series.

    • I got the first in this series from the library but it was an ebook. It’s a great series. I think you could read them out of order as they are not tightly connected but I try never to read out of order anyway.

  1. I grinned as soon as I saw the dog on the cover. I’m a sucker for a book with dogs in it and like that this series focuses on them to a degree. The dynamic between Dane and Kat also sounds entertaining.

    • Books with dogs are a win. I think I discovered this as I was doing my Series on Saturday about K9. I’ve found even more since that feature. But all the books in this series are worth reading and I enjoyed them a lot.
