Ana da Silva always assumed she’d die young, she just never expected it to be at the hands of Famine, the haunting immortal who once spared her life so many years ago. But if the horseman remembers her at all, he must not care, for when she comes face to face with him for the second time in her life, she’s stabbed and left for dead.

Only, she doesn’t quite die.

If there’s one thing Famine is good at, it’s cruelty. And how these blighted bastards deserve it. Try as he might, he can’t forget what they once did to him. But when Ana, a ghost from his past, corners him and promises pain for what he so recently did to her, she and her empty threats captivate him, and he decides to keep her around.

In spite of themselves, Ana and Famine are drawn to each other. But at the end of the day, the two are enemies. Nothing changes that. Not one kind act, not two. And definitely not a few steamy nights. But enemies or reluctant lovers, if they don’t stop themselves soon, heaven will.

Famine is the third book of  The Four Horsemen series. .  This is a different kind of romantasy, I mean it is literally the apocalypse and God has sent forth his horsemen to cleanse the world.  Pestilence and War have already left their mark and now it is Famine’s turn.

Ana met the Famine the first time he came to her village.  It is now five years later and they have some unfinished business.  The only problem is it didn’t really go the way Ana thought it would.  Famine is a force of nature and you can’t really negotiate with him the way you could with a person.  He has one task given to him before he can shed this mortal coil and that is to cleanse the world.  There is a lot of death and murder and did I mention the death, cuz wowzers on how many die in this series.

Famine is even less human than his brothers War and Pestilence if that is possible and this story starts a bit darker.  That said Ana really knows how to get under his skin.  She taunts and teases him in ways no one else has been able to.  She might die any moment but she is going to say whatever she wants until that time comes and I think it is freeing almost to know the end is neigh.  Ana was a prostitute and will use every trick she learned both inside and outside of the bedroom to knock Famine off his stride.

They make a good paring and Famine might be slower to come into his humanity than his brothers were but once he gets there he is just as fierce in his devotion to the woman who taught him how to be a person.  While dark, I’ve really enjoyed all the books in this series.  You do have to remember that the Male protagonists are not of this world really to kind of get past all the killing.  There is also a little bit of Stockholm syndrome that might be happening with the women in the series but I have enjoyed all the stories told so far.

Like most romance series, this is one where you can read this books without reading the others of the series.  That said with how this one ended I do not think that will be true for the last book in the series.  Personally I’d read them in order to really get the full scope of the destruction of the apocalypses to the world.

“One other inhuman thing about me, flower.” Famine turns his head slightly towards me. “I don’t simply exist, I hunger.”

Narration:

I specifically waited to read this until the audio was available because Susannah Jones is the narrator for the series.  She brings a great voice to the characters and I always love the way the strong and feisty women come across in her performances.  She did a fantastic job again of bringing the characters to life.

About Laura Thalassa

Found in the forest when she was young, Laura Thalassa was raised by fairies, kidnapped by werewolves, and given over to vampires as repayment for a hundred year debt. She’s been brought back to life twice, and, with a single kiss, she woke her true love from eternal sleep. She now lives happily ever after with her undead prince in a castle in the woods.

… or something like that anyway.

When not writing, Laura can be found scarfing down guacamole, hoarding chocolate for the apocalypse, or curled up on the couch with a good book.

  1. It is one of those series that won’t be for everyone. But I appreciated the change up from other romances I’ve read.

  2. I enjoyed Pestilence but have yet to read War or Famine. From the one book I read, I can definitely believe the body count continues to be insane and that the women have a form of Stockholm Syndrome but I enjoyed what I read regardless and will definitely continue with the series. 🙂
