Returning from an extended leave in her hometown of Cedar Grove, Detective Tracy Crosswhite finds herself reassigned to the Seattle PDā€™s cold case unit. As the protective mother of an infant daughter, Tracy is immediately drawn to her first file: the abduction of a five-year-old girl whose parents, embattled in a poisonous divorce, were once prime suspects.

While reconstructing the days leading up to the girlā€™s disappearance, Tracy is brought into an active investigation with former partner Kinsington Rowe. A young woman has vanished on an isolated jogging trail in North Seattle. Divided between two critical cases, Tracy has little to go on except the treacherous deceptions behind a broken marriageā€”and now, the secrets hiding behind the closed doors of a deceptively quiet middle-class neighborhood.

To find two missing persons, Tracy will have to follow more than clues, which are both long cold and unsettlingly fresh. Given her own traumatic past, Tracy must also follow her instinctsā€”to whatever dark and dangerous places they may lead.

The Tracy Crosswhite series is an absolute favorite.Ā  Tracy is so smart and skilled.Ā  She is also very talented at handling her rotten captain calmly.Ā  She has an amazing set of allies and co-workers.Ā  But her instincts are very good.

In Her Tracks finds Tracy coming back from maternity leave.Ā  She personally is dealing with not being with her daughter every day.Ā  Although she has an excellent nanny, it is still hard.Ā  Ā At work, her captain has shifted her off her top homicide team to a cold case unit. The previous cold case guy retired the day Tracy returned. He’s done well lately by using new DNA technology to solve old cases.

The two cases she works initially are a cold case with prostitutes disappearing with very little evidence, and the disappearance of a 5 year old girl.Ā  They are not the type of cases where new DNA tech would help but they are important to Tracy.Ā  With fresh eyes, she hopes to see things others missed.Ā  Having a daughter, she is distraught by any missing little girl.Ā  Ā The women who vanish with no trace remind her strongly of her sister Sarah’s case and she has experience with that type of case. There is a fresh active case with a newly missing young women with similar aspects as well.

Tracy gathers evidence capably and with compassion and care.Ā  I worried she might get hurt not having a partner but she follows great procedures and calls for backup when needed.Ā  Ā The plot twists and terrifies but Tracy is the calm in the storm.Ā  I am always ready for more of her cases.Ā  It looks like the next release will be November 2022.

Narration:

I love Emily Sutton-Smith as the narrator for this series.Ā  She is Tracy in my head. The male and female voices are distinct and I recognize characters pretty well now.Ā  I was able to listenĀ  at my usual 1.5x speed.

  1. I see Robert Dugoni’s books all over the Kindle Books page on Amazon every time I sign in but I have yet to try one. This series sounds fantastic though and Tracy sounds like my kind of protagonist.
