Provocateur and spy for His Majesty, Captain John Carlisle returns to Fort Niagara with the secrets he stole in the arms of the beautiful Oneida innkeeper, Dellis McKesson. Determined to complete his mission and clear his name, he’ll see justice done—and damn the consequences. Now, he finds himself drawn into political intrigue as the British prepare to launch a three-pronged attack that will bring the Rebels and the Mohawk River Valley to its knees.
A dangerous revelation finds Dellis as whispers of intrigue insinuate her beloved is not all that he seems. Unwilling to wait for her lover’s return, she sets out in search of the truth as the Onieda begin negotiations with the Rebels, breaking the neutrality agreement with the crown. A bold move that will stoke a fire between the brother tribes and lead to a bloody inter-confederacy war—one Dellis predicted, and one John incited.
While war between the colonies and the King smolders, the punishing winter of 1777 allows the perfect opportunity for old enemies to settle scores, lying in wait, ready to exploit John’s one weakness—his heart. John is not an innocent man. The truth he’s long tried to hide from can no longer be ignored, the ghosts of the past seeking justice, and karma wanting payment for sins so dark they cannot be forgiven.
The Traitor picks up the Rebels and Redcoats Saga right where The Tory ended. I began reading with a hopeful heart and at first it seemed things would improve for my favored characters. But again the author is tearing my heart out, and while fulfilling my need for information about who are the liars and traitors and spies, solving the mysteries, my romantic soul is tortured.
John continues to try to improve things and be a better man. He continues to be caught up because of others using him and taking advantage of his past mistakes. He is rightfully afraid to come clean to Dellis. But his lack of trust in her is an injustice to her strength. Oddly, he also has more problems by being distracted by his emotions rather than using his head and his skills. It makes him seem weak.
Dellis is learning everything and has no support from anyone. She continues to be in danger from multiple sources and is not quite aware of those targeting her for their own reasons or to hurt John. She is a bit willful and overconfident in her choices; her choices are naïve.
One of the problems is, but also the beautiful complexities of the story, there are more than two sides to these battles. It is not just Redcoats vs. the Rebels. There are also the natives, and they are also broken into multiple tribes with different beliefs and agendas. There are also those who are only out for themselves like Roger Delancey and Mrs. Allen, and even Stuart McKesson. Due to the time period, many of them do not have complete or accurate information to make their decisions.
Oh it’s a heartbreaking mess. I don’t see how it will go well. There are a few lulls in the storm here but problems are waiting in the wings. I loved this so much I bought it. It looks like book 3, The Turncoat is already available in a Kindle version. The audio has my favorite narrator though.
Narration:
I continue to enjoy the narrators from The Tory, including the favorite Shane East. The audio performances add a rich emotion to the story. I was able to listen comfortably at 1.5x speed.

T.J. London is a new author to me, but I look forward to reading this. I always love meeting new authors. Thanks to this blog for the introduction.
I’d start with the first book The Tory and they are long but so good. I really hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
Thank you!
Thank you for getting me started on the series.
I’ve been seeing and reading a lot about this book and I really love the sound of it. I’ll definitely need to read it myself. 😀
It’s incredible. I do think you need to read the series in order. The audio is so worth it.
Yeah, this is definitely one for the keeper shelf. John and Dellis were great characters and they go through so much in this story. It’s tempting to read the next one right away but the narrators were so good that I think I will wait for the next audiobook. I am so glad that you enjoyed it.
I have the same dilemma about reading the ebook now or waiting for the audio. I haven’t decided yet.
This sounds fantastic! Oh, how I love a full cast narration, too. Excellent review, Anne?
Yes you will love this one.
wow, sounds like a good potential in this series. I need to look more closely at volume 1 though. Thanks for introducing a new author to me
yes definitely start with The Tory, then the Traitor. The narration is excellent.
Wars are heartbreaking since mostly it’s not just as simple as one right side and one wrong side. There are individuals involved. I like to wait for until the audio is out, especially if it’s a favorite performer narrating. Hope the last one turns out well! Nice giveaway!
I really enjoyed these so much. I hope she produces audio of the third book.
