As veteran detectives of the Birmingham Police Department, Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco have seen it all. So when the city’s new hotshot deputy district attorney turns up dead as part of a double homicide, the partners immediately get to work.

But this is no ordinary case. Devlin and Falco quickly link the murdered DDA to one of their own: former BPD detective Sadie Cross. But Sadie’s fractured memory is yet another puzzle to decipher, as she only recalls bits and pieces of her violent past…a past that may hold clues to the motive behind the murders.

As the group slowly begins to unearth the truth, they soon discover that the more secrets are revealed, the more fatal the consequences.

I am thrilled to continue the Devlin & Falco series. The first book,  Trust No One, was an introduction to the world, the characters and some big homicide investigations.  There was a lot happening.  Our point of view is from Kerri Devlin, a homicide detective.   Her niece was missing. She got a new partner.

Now in Gone Too Far, I wouldn’t say things have calmed down any.  Devlin is very comfortable with her partner now, which is a real comfort with everything else going to….  There’s a new double homicide with the DEA horning in on the case.   Her daughter and friends are with a “mean” girl at school who falls down the stairs.

The added viewpoint of Sadie Cross is a terrific addition.  She has some connections to the homicide. She worked undercover to try to take down the cartel which may be involved (hence the DEA involvement which is headed by her father).  She was friends with the new DDA who was murdered also.

The plot is complex and exciting.  Some things were pretty clear to me quickly but others were more difficult to discern.  Even sorting out the bad guys from the good guys to the lazy guys, wasn’t simple.   Along with all the suspense of the investigation, there is plenty of character development and progress.  Devlin & Falco are very skilled and hard-working detectives; they also have good instincts.

I’m looking forward to more in Can’t Go Back, releasing December 2021.  Sadie goes through some big changes and I can’t wait to see how that goes.  She is definitely becoming good friends with Devlin & Falco, too.   I really love this series, but I would recommend reading it in order.  The series is available in Kindle Unlimited, including the audio version.

Narration:

I read the first book in the series, so this was my first experience with this narrator.   I really enjoyed her performance and appreciated the distinct voices for the characters, male and female as well as the teens and children.   I listened comfortably at my usual 1.5x speed.

  1. Yes, that does sound like a good complex plot and developed characters. I have enjoyed Donna Postel narrating some of Carolyn Brown’s books. I’ll have to look up this series.

  2. This sounds like a winner to me. Sometimes I struggle with detective series if the characters feel flat and undeveloped so I like what you had to saw about the characters being complex and well developed.
