The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week, and showcase books and things we have received.
Stacking The Shelves is also a weekly meme hosted by Marlene from Reading Reality. It’s all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!
Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.
Sunday, I managed lots of chores around COYER Book Club and the Psy-Changeling FB chat. The FB chat continues to be a really excellent discussion of the series which provides me with a lot more depth for my read. I’m so grateful we are doing them. I made my “off the top of my head” Breakfast Burritos which are a favorite of my daughter.
Monday, I ended up needing to do an Instacart order for a few items we needed. I did my computer work and wrote a few reviews, then on to the chores and projects. The ex edged the yard, cut some tree branches and started on the yard SOD plan. I got the compost refilled in its new location. We had bratwurst which I really liked! I also made peach crisp. It’s early in the season but it was pretty good. We cleaned up the dining room so we could play games but were too tired to actually play after dinner.
Tuesday, with places open I had phone calls to make and work to do. In the afternoon, the kitchen designer stopped by to work on the plans for a totally remolded kitchen. I got to pick cabinet styles and colors, countertops, and the type of cabinet shelves, rollouts or lazy susans and that sort of thing.
Wednesday, I finally researched and called 2 glass companies for estimates on the window repair. I decided to wash my bedding and switch over from the comforter to the quilt for summer. Edit: I can’t believe I forgot to say this quilt was hand stitched by my mother and grandmother. My grandma was an excellent cook, seamstress, knitter and gardener and more. I made an apple cake using an old Bon Appetit recipe substituting raisins for walnuts.
Thursday, my daughter is 25 today. Also her summer class in Anthropology begins. We planned to go out to dinner but after our chiro / massage appts we just stayed home I made our new favorite Scallops with snow peas / herbs over rice.
Friday the rain was ending but it was hot and humid. I did my emails, visiting, writing reviews and packaged up a Lands End return to go. Then headed out to do errands. I haven’t done this sort of thing for a long time and it was tiring. I went to a nursery and got impatiens there. Then I went to drop off an Amazon return at the UPS store. I got tomato plants and marigolds at Home Depot. Then I got some cash at the bank to pay the neighbor boys for when they help with the lawn / SOD project over the next week. I picked up a 3 hole punch I got thru the Buy Nothing group on facebook. The last stop was the grocery store. It took 3.5 hours and I got home at 5:30 without having lunch yet. I put everything away. I decided to take a break before starting on dinner. Our Amazon monthly order also came but that had to wait.
Saturday, the day started with no hot water. So I had to call for the warranty but they don’t come out on the weekend. We were planning to work on the yard and move all the soil. Just when we have all the hot, sweaty work. I’m all discombobulated and not getting done the things I planned.
May Reading: I had another good reading month. I managed to read 28 books. Audiobooks continue to help me read more. Traveling really helped me get back into the audiobook mode, as well as finally being able to be more active. I listened to 14 audiobooks, read 7 library books, 27 COYER reads, and 10 books which I already own. Some count for more than one challenge/ category.
All Library books (including ones not reviewed on the blog) 2021 Library Love Challenge
I created post shells as I got ARCs.
I did manage to read 10 books I own (goal is 3 per month):
- Cyclone by Janie Crouch
- Breaking His Code by Patricia
- ? On the Edge by Ilona Andrews
- Hot Billionaire for Hire by Cat Johnson
- Declan by Caitlyn O’Leary
- ? A Court of Thorn and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
- Cursed Blood by Luke Mitchell
- Soldier of Charity by Luke Mitchell
- ? Red Gambit by Luke Mitchell
- Hell to Pay by Luke Mitchell
Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Reading Reality. These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):
Thank you so much to Thomas & Mercer, DAW Books, Minotaur Books, and John Joseph Adams / Mariner Books.
(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)
I got 3 audios as Chirp deals for $3 or $4 each. Then I grabbed the Audible Daily Deal of Vanishing Fleece for $2.
Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.
I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.
I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.
Anne
Happy birthday to your daughter! And I love the quilt on your bed. I really had fun with the Rory Thorne books (especially the first one). Hope your hot water is back soon!
Thanks Tammy. The quilt was hand stitched by my mother and grandma (no machine work)
Happy birthday to your daughter!!
Busy week! Sorry about the water, that’s the worst. I hope they come out tomorrow and get it fixed for you. That quilt is beautiful – is it one you made? Dante has just started using blankets when he sleeps – the quilt you made him is a favorite ❤️.
How exciting to be remodeling the kitchen! What’s the time estimate? I dream of having a house and getting to do projects like this!
Have a great week!
Thank you! I hope they fix the water tomorrow and don’t have to order some part which takes weeks. They installed it less than 2 years ago. The quilt was handstitched by my mom and grandma with no machine work at all. I don’t think the kitchen stuff will happen until later in the year but it takes planning and once ordered about 3 months lead time too. It’s standard midrange cabinets but with a custom layout. It would be the 4th kitchen I’ve redone and 2 were completely custom.
Birthday wishes for your daughter ?
I’d love to remodel my kitchen.. my husband even works for a joinery company that does custom kitchen design but still I have the basic white crappy one that was here when we moved in!
The quilt is lovely, and a beautiful heirloom. I’ve just pulled out the blanket my grandmother crocheted for my lap on the lounge now that the winter weather is here.
Wishing you a great reading week
Thank you! I love the blankets and items made by grandma. I also have things like my dad’s navy dress whites, navy sweaters and pea coat which I have worn over the years.
great post and it sounds like you had a good week. we had planned some home remodeling, including a complete kitchen makeover last year, before covid. now, i’m not sure what we will do since things for us have changed so drastically.
Yeah I’m not sure how soon I will do it. I have considered solar also but would want to do a new roof first. So we will see.
OMG 28 books??? I truly don’t know how you do it Anne! And your daughter is already 25? The time is flying by! Have a great week!
Half of the books I read are audio and I listen while I do all kinds of chores or walking or setting up new posts. Time is flying!
I love that you’re getting back to a lot of your activities and able to work on your to-do list. Happy birthday to your daughter and yay that her dad could visit for that and help you out with your list. Man, the plumbing going is never good, but really bad timing there. Your breakfast burritos look delish and your gran’s quilt is lovely. I keep my gran’s quilt on a quilt hanging rack when I’m not using it.
Your May numbers for reads and challenges looks fab. Way to go on all those from your own shelf.
Have a great June, Anne!
Thanks Sophia! I realized I didn’t put a link up in this Thrifty Thursday somehow. I think because I was adding all those books. But I have to read my purchases sometimes, right? I’m happy to get projects done more now.
What a beautiful quilt! And how special to have one that your grandmother made — and still be able to use it. My grandmother’s quilt is getting too fragile to use on a bed, but I hope to be able to display it someday.
I am loving the book club meetings, too. This last discussion was particularly good. I’m sorry I will miss June’s meeting!
I wish I could take advantage of the Audible deals! But we’re trying to keep subscriptions to a minimum. Alas, my library doesn’t even have the book, let alone the audiobook.
Sorry about your hot water — I hope you get it fixed soon!
I love all my old quilts and my new ones I made. This one is particularly special with no machine stitching and those single color parts have hand-stitched designs. I only put it on the bed in the summer. I have all my family and friend’s library cards to get things so I manage. My local library is crap, really. I almost never find anything there.
Happy birthday to your daughter! Anthropology was one of my favorite electives in college. I don’t know exactly why, but something about it just really intrigued me!
Have a great week and I hope you get your hot water fixed soon!
Thank you! She’s excited about this class.
Running errands is time consuming and wears me out too. Sounds like you got a lot accomplished. That’s a beautiful quilt and all the more special with its history. The breakfast burritos look delicious. I’ll check out the recipe. 🙂
Yes I’m debating about canceling Instacart or not. It’s convenient but more expensive. I’ll have to see. Walmart pickup is good without extra fees. You can change up the ingredients in the burritos to your tastes- we do.
Oh Happy birthday to your daughter!! Have a lovely week and happy reading!
Thank you!
Designing a new kitchen sounds exciting. Having a water heater that doesn’t work sounds like a pain though. Hopefully, you can get that fixed without too much trouble. Happy birthday to your daughter! I hope that you have a great week!
It was a nice birthday I think. yes, the water heater is fixed promptly on Monday morning. It sucks it went out Saturday am so we had cold water all weekend though.
The quilt looks beautiful, Anne. We’ve got one on our bed and it’s my favourite soft furnishing.
Hope you have a great reading (listening) week. x
Thank you! I only use it in the summer months as it is hand made by my grandma. I have more quilts and am making more which we will use more regular times But I like a down comforter in the winter That’s the Minnesota showing
Happy Birthday to your girl! Sounds like a decent week – how fun having a new kitchen. It’s on my wish list, but waiting for the kids to finish HS first – also need a redo on one of our bathrooms and family room.
Thank you We will see how things work out when I can do the kitchen but I’m figuring it out at least.
Hope your daughter had a great birthday!
Lots of good freebies this week, Anne. I’m also really glad you’re enjoying the Facebook book chats. It’s why I love series group reads.
Have another great week?
It has been really fun. It was Berls’ idea as part of COYER. It has been better than I thought it could be.
Kitchen remodel sounds exciting! Gated Prey has me curious. Enjoy your new bunch o’books.
Well it will be disruptive if I decide to do it. So I need to think carefully about timing. Gated Prey is the third in the series which is fun, a bit ridiculous but with interesting mysteries.
Those breakfast burritos look delicious! I hope you enjoy that Meghan Quinn book, I love all her series, but as a teacher myself, I’m enjoying that series especially.
Thanks Lisa I have not yet read Meghan Quinn but this gives me a chance to try her work.
Your breakfast burrito looks yummy! Good luck with the kitchen remodel. I would like to do one–along with some other major renovations around the house, but time and money just aren’t there yet. One can dream though, right? I hope the hot water situation got fixed. Ugh. That would be frustrating! I hope you enjoy your new books! I enjoyed How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse and hope you will too. I haven’t read the sequel yet. Have a great weekend! Sorry for such a late visit. It’s been so busy and my computer time, other than for work, has been almost non-existent.
No worries Wendy We visit when we can. The hot water was fixed quickly Monday morning. I have many things I wish to update but everything does take time and money so we will see.
