Sunday Post – 29 August 2021 @kimbacaffeinate @readingreality

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly  @ Caffeinated Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week, and showcase books and things we have received.

Don’t forget to look at my giveaways on the right sidebar.

Sunday,  I woke early but dozed until later.  I’m feeling better today.  It’s cloudy and not quite as hot.  I’m doing the usual blog visiting. I went down a rabbit hole of creating a new spreadsheet to track series I am collecting on audio because I have some in a combination of ARCs, Chirp, Audible, etc.  So I’m trying to not accidentally buy something twice.

Monday,  I am still reading a lot for the pile of ARCs centered on Aug 31/Sep 7.   I notified winners from the two giveaways which ended today.   I went to check out something on Netgalley and found many, many new ARCs I want, mostly for early 2022.  I’m in an ARC avalanche.

Tuesday,  my daughter had two medical appointments.  The first one was really good and made some adjustments in her medications which were needed.   The next one was in person for dermatology.  She needed a new one because the one we have gone to for years is no longer covered by our insurance plus now we can get one closer to where we live now.   We picked up some RX,  and I mailed some prizes.

Wednesday,  I didn’t even read the news or look at social media. I just read my book.  Luckily, it was a very good book.  I finished reading and writing my review about 6pm.  The guy came and got the old freezer just afterward,  which was sad, but good.  I cooked our dinner and made banana muffins.   We are getting some gnats and I made a couple of “traps” with water, sugar, apple cider vinegar and dish soap.  One caught about 8 in the first few hours, but the other didn’t catch any.   I don’t know much about gnats as I have never had this issue.  I’ve had fruit flies once in a while which are part of this family of insects.  I had to read up on it; apparently there are several types.

Thursday,  I got up and started reading my next book right away. No social media.  And I just finished it.  So then it was time to get going since my daughter has a med appt today.  I’m going to get some groceries after I drop her off.   She also has a new Zoom chronic pain group for some weeks now though October.   She’s been showing me this new show about making meals out of leftovers which is interesting but stupidly quirky sometimes.

Friday,  I ended up having to go out again.  We had to take Lulu to the vet for another ear infection and update her allergy shot.   She was very good. When we got home I had to trim her nails finally so all the torture is complete.  It actually went well; Lulu is best girl.  We also did curbside pickup at Lowes and Home Depot  I got different paver blocks so I could figure out which one I want to use for the new front flower bed.   Some of those pesky bushes are trying to come back.  I’m going to have to cut those off and spray them with sealer again.

Saturday,  I woke up earlyish  and fell back asleep for 4 hours.  Guess I was tired.  It is beastly hot now and for the next few days, mid 90s again.  I worked on writing some reviews, setting up some posts and other computer tasks.  I’m a bit ahead finally so I only have one book left to read for this week, instead of 4.  Now to get a bit ahead.  I picked out stain colors as it looks like I will have to stain the part of the fence that shows from the front at least.  Over time, I plan to replace all of the fence with new boards, a section at a time, but not in the next 30 days.  I’m really just waiting for the weather to cool so I can do a huge number of projects.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Reading Reality.  These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):

Thanks so much to Montlake,   Thomas & Mercer, Tantor Audio,  Entangled Publishing,   St. Martin’s Press, DAW books,

(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)

I couldn’t resist this $1.99 deal. I already own the whole series on audio.

Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT  they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone this afternoon for the Read-along Chat (Tangle of Need by Nalini Singh) and the COYER Book Club (The Duchess War by Courtney Milan) .

  1. I did not know Dugoni had another book in the Charles Jenkins series scheduled for release! Thank you and I just added it. I’m committed to the audio version so I’ll be waiting until February.

Warms my heart that one of your freebies is by Lisa Clark O’Neill! I’m a die-hard fan of this indie writer. One of my Goodreads groups read the first book in her Southern Comfort series and then I binged the rest. I think I own every book she’s written and really hope you enjoy!

Great book haul week and enjoy everything?

    • I might get the audio also for the Dugoni, that’s how I’ve read the previous books. I remembered that you loved O’Neill so I was very excited to get it. More of the series is in KU I think. Not that I have time to continue at the moment.

      Thank you Jonetta!

    • There are a lot but they are over several months. Glimmer is Oct and I had one spot left for it. But it’s hard because sometimes I plan things and I don’t get them at all or if they are audio I sometimes get them on the release date and then it takes a week or two to listen and do the review. The publishers all handle it differently. I’ve tried for some audios on Netgalley where I got declined but I got it from my publisher contact directly. *shrugs*

I’m mad on your behalf over the whole fence thing. It’s a bunch of phooy.

I love Anne Renwick – I forget if you’ve read her previously. If not, I recommend starting at the beginning because you get to meet some of the characters earlier in the series. But they are all standalone romances.

I hope the week ahead is a good one!

    • I know you love Anne Renwick which is why I am collecting them, in multiple formats based on where I can get them. I have some freebies, some Chirp deals. I need to look at the series and see if I have most to get started. I did check recently and I think the library has a few of the ebooks but no audio. There are two series I have parts of, I think.

As for the fence, they don’t like the weathered look and I do. But I will stain the part you can see from the street. I am still repairing and replacing parts as I have been for the past 2 years. I’m used to the weathered look, as where I grew up in Iowa it was more about function than color so the weathered look is like antique, something strong and resilient and functional. Yes my parents grew up during the Depression but distressing furniture to look antique came later. But they want a look that is newly kept up for property values.

  3. NetGalley is addictive. I’m trying not to browse lately and keep reading the review books I already have. I get much more accomplished when I put my phone away and disconnect from social media.
It’s been very hot and humid here these past two weeks also. August is holding on strong.
Happy reading this week! I like Diane Chamberlain’s books.

    • Sorry you got the wrong comment first. Anyway, I look at Netgalley every week as I am updating my reviews there. Mostly I check for books I plan to read and also to make sure I am not missing new ones in series I am already reading. I have more trouble not taking great audio books for review than the Netgalley ones.

I’m looking forward to August letting go, maybe we will get a little rain with Ida. I hope to read more of Chamberlain’s back list also.

  4. I have a lot of books due Aug 31st too! I’m trying to get through them. I planned on reading all this afternoon, but my SIL/BIL invited us for lunch and we haven’t seen them in a long time. Would’ve felt guilty refusing. I’ll be reading after that.

  5. Ohmygosh those gnats!!!!! I’m glad we have a good supply of masks on hand for COVID. I might need to wear one just to keep the dang gnats out of my nose when I’m trying to work. They nearly drove me crazy one day.

  6. I really REALLY need to try Kendra Elliot, I have been wanting to read more suspense and thrillers lately. All these hot days are just getting tiresome right? I am sure like me you are looking forward to fall.

  7. Way to go getting through all your errands and that stack of books you needed to. I’ve got two more to be all caught up on August, but I’ve also started on some of my September ones. My next big blob of review books is the end of October though I don’t plan to review them all that week since some are Christmas themed. Yay for Lulu getting through her shot and nail trim. 🙂 Bummer about needing to stain the fence when you’re planning to replace it anyway.
    Have a good week, Anne!

    • Last week was kind of errand and med appt heavy especially with the Lulu add on happening on Friday. This week there are no med appts other than one telehealth one. If the weather actually does get just a bit cooler, I’ll tend to some yard stuff. Otherwise I’ll have to get up really early since it is still in the 90s after dark right now. Yes I am happily working on Sept review books now! Thank you Sophia!

    • Well, the books I just got are January releases so I don’t feel too badly. If I have a calendar spot or have been waiting for them, it’s ok. The ones that are bad are the ones I didn’t realize were coming out or that I don’t really have a review spot but just really want to read or that I forget I requested because they didn’t approve me very soon.

Lulu was better the same day and is fine now. She had a good ear wash and some antibiotic in the inflamed ear.

  8. Lorna

So I guess your HOA really is being stupid about your fence that was there first before your neighbors gate. That just doesn’t seem fair! You stay so busy. I don’t know how you get it all done and still cook dinner. I used to be able to multitask until got to my retirement years. Now I’m lucky to get one major task done a day. I hope it cools off for you this week. I think it only got to the 80’s today(Monday-just haven’t been to bed yet)and I’m really curious to see what Ida is going to bring us later this week. Are you getting any of that?

    • yes I can see the HOA’s point about the color not being even but you also can’t see it very well from the street. I really hope we get even a 5 degree cool down because otherwise I am going to have to get up really early to mow. It’s in the 90s still after dark. For some mowings I was able to do it at 6 or 7 in the evening but it’s still too hot then these past few weeks. I don’t know if we will get Ida leftovers, we could use some rain and we are supposed to get some on Wednesday. So we will see.

  9. It’s funny you mention the new spreadsheet for audio books because I just recently created (yet another) bookish spreadsheet, too. One to track series that are in-work that I want to prioritize to complete, and one to track series I want to start. Oh, and yet another for a standalone TBR. I swear, I will invent reasons for new lists. 🙂 Ugh, sounds like it’s heating back up there. It’s been hovering right around 90 for over a week now, which is miserable but a whole lot better than mid/upper 90’s. I hope your week is off to a good start, Anne!

    • Really I can get all the info I put on the spreadsheet from my Goodreads data, I just can’t print it in the format I’d like. Instead of looking at a nice list in the spreadsheet, I’d have to check each book individually and by the time I was done I would forget which ones I had or didn’t, so I’d have to write them down every time I checked so spreadsheet. I don’t need it so much when just checking one book to see if I own it but more for looking at if I own most of the series and in what format.

It’s still hot. Maybe Ida will bring us some cool and rain.

  10. I am so ready for summer to be over – or at least the hot weather. It’s been disgusting around here lately. Lol.

It sounds like you had a great week! I am glad your daughter found a Zoom group, it is so good to have a community going through the same stuff to chat with!

  11. Wow! You’ve been super productive this week! I’m glad you got the extra sleep. Definitely sounds like you were tired! I hope you like the new dermatologist. Why do ARCs always come out at the same time? They always seem to stack up. Have a great week!
