Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim - the Thursday Murder Club - are still riding high off their recent real-life murder case and are looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet at Cooper’s Chase, their posh retirement village.

But they are out of luck.

An unexpected visitor - an old pal of Elizabeth’s (or perhaps more than just a pal?) - arrives, desperate for her help. He has been accused of stealing diamonds worth millions from the wrong men and he’s seriously on the lam.

Then, as night follows day, the first body is found. But not the last. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim are up against a ruthless murderer who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. Can our four friends catch the killer before the killer catches them? And if they find the diamonds, too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus? You should never put anything beyond the Thursday Murder Club.

I am delighted with this next adventure of the Thursday Murder Club series.  The setting in England and the beloved characters are positives.  This close-knit group of seniors do excellent work in using their long experience with people in solving murders.  They do have the help of friends, and Elizabeth’s MI5 contacts and their police friends, Chris and Donna.

We do get all four of our favorite septuagenarians’ point of view.  Joyce does hers in both her thoughts and her diary entries.  She provides the most precious humor.  Elizabeth plays everything close to the vest, so there is not as much details from her.  Ibrahim is very observant and knows a great deal about people.  Ron has his heart in the right place but he can be a bit silly sometimes.

There are both local and international criminals in the events here.  Elizabeth’s ex-husband has stolen diamonds and is in trouble with pretty much everyone.  He comes to Elizabeth hoping for help.   Ibrahim is caught in a mugging which enrages everyone who are then determined to make the culprit pay.  Joyce gets an Instagram account which is hilarious and decides to get a dog.  Ron is busy with supporting Ibrahim and capturing his mugger.   Chris is in a new relationship.  Donna is looking for a relationship or at least some friends.

Elizabeth, and surprisingly Joyce,  do most of the work discovering the criminals, finding the diamonds, and bringing the criminals to justice.  But they have some dangerous moments and have to work hard to figure out the murders and how to get evidence with the criminals for certain convictions.  They are the most endearing people, smart and funny and loyal.  I loved this so much.

Narration:

Manville narrated the previous book in the series and so I was very comfortable with her again.  Her performance had a fantastic emotional tone and provided distinct voices for the different characters.    I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

    • Yes it’s older women and men, 2 of each but they are incredible. The women really took the lead here. Elizabeth is hard to read but it smart as a whip. Joyce comes off as a gossipy fluff but she has a clever mind. It’s a terrific and fun series.
