Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detective Eve Ronin and her soon-to-retire partner, Duncan Pavone, are running a 24-7 sting in a guard-gated enclave of palatial homes in Calabasas. Their luxury McMansion is a honey trap, set to lure in the violent home invaders terrorizing the community. The trap works, leaving three intruders dead, a body count that nearly includes Eve and Duncan.

Eve’s bosses are eager to declare the case closed, but there are too many unanswered questions for her to let go. Was the trap actually for her, bloody payback for Eve’s very public takedown of a clique of corrupt deputies? Or is there an even deadlier secret lurking behind those opulent gates? Eve’s refusal to back down and her relentless quest for the truth make her both the hunter…and the prey.

The Eve Ronin series is like other police procedurals I read, only it isn’t.  Eve is a new homicide detective in a misogynistic, political  department in Los Angeles California. She became famous in the first book for arresting a tv star behaving badly, which helped her get the promotion.

Eve has a tough balance between the others in the department who actively try to sabotage or even harm her, and continue to harass her,  and her greedy family who want to use her to get themselves Hollywood parts.  Eve is not taking great care of herself but she continues to knock it out of the park on solving cases and catching criminals.   She is very dedicated to her job and has almost no other life outside working.

It feels there is no one on her side, except perhaps her partner who is retiring.  She finds now she doesn’t know him as well as she thought she did.  But he sticks up for her.   There are few other detectives who acknowledge her excellent work.   The players and the situations keep changing.

The case work and police procedures seem somewhat realistic, even though the corruption seems a bit over the top.  But the Hollywood and image aspects feel totally ridiculous.  It gives the books a lighter feel even though the crimes are very serious.   The collection and review of evidence is smart and strategic without the immediate results like the tv shows.

Gated Prey has a good balance of the case and personal issues.  I’d love to see Eve catch a break with a bit more of a personal life and some support from friends and family though.

This series was my first listen to this narrator.  I’m very comfortable with her performance of Eve and the other main characters feel right to me.  I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

I really like this series. Just found these this year read the second one a couple of weeks ago. Eve has the mother nobody would want. I also hate how her colleagues treat her. And they better not kill her partner off!
